nayanatara special!! Pics

At just the age of 21 years, Keralite Nayanthara has acquired the reputation of acting opposite male actors who are almost twice as old. She starred in her first Malyalam film opposite Jayaram, and then in “Chandramukhi” with renowned Indian actor Rajnikanth, then with other aging actors like Sarath Kumar, Mohanlal, and Mammotty. Now she has been cast to play the lead role in a much younger Simbu’s directorial debut, in which he also has the lead role. Nayanthara and Simbu’s intimate life-sized posters created shock waves in Chennai, which were subsequently pulled down by the police. Similar excitement resulted when glamorous life-sized posters were posted all over Chennai - this time with her co-star S.J. Surya. With her attractive looks and talent, it is no wonder that she is one of the most popular actresses in the Tamil film industry.

Sri Lanka end series on a high; beat Aussies by 13 runs

Sri Lanka humbled Australia by 13 runs to clinch the 12th match of the CB series in a remarkable game that see-sawed rapidly.
Chasing 222, Australia found themselves in a hole at 173/9. However, the last wicket pair of Brett Lee (37) and Nathan Bracken (14) put together a dogged 35-run stand to take them closer to the target.
The equation boiled down to 14 runs in two overs. Sanath Jayasuriya, summoned to bowl the 49th over, castled Lee who went for an expansive pull.
Chasing 222, Australia were cruising after Adam Gilchrist put them right on top with a 50-ball 83.
However, six wickets went for 16 runs between the 14th and the 24th over as Sri Lankan seamers Nuwan Kulasekara and Ishara Amerasinghe turned the screws on the Aussies.
The Australian openers, led by a furious onslaught by Gilchrist, sailed their way to 100 in the 13th over.
Gilchrist switched into the kind of mode when it becomes impossible to bowl to him. A pull off Amerasinghe in the seventh over signified the kind of mood he was in.
As if eager to sign off on a glorious note in his final appearance in Melbourne, Gilchrist went about carting the bowlers in this customary fashion, racing to fifty in just 35 balls with eight fours and a six.
He had his share of luck when Muttiah Muralitharan trapped him in front, but the umpire wasn’t convinced.
Gilchrist continued his assault on the hapless Lankan bowlers, using his feet to Muralitharan to take the aerial route. Lasith Malinga, too, couldn’t hit the right length pitching the ball too full and wide.
Australia had sailed their way to 100 in the 13th over, threatening to make quick-work of the chase. Sri Lanka finally got the breakthrough when James Hopes, who was a spectator at the other end, fell for 28 under strange circumstances. The ball just brushed the bails and dislodged it. Replays finally confirmed that Hopes was bowled.

Tough ask for Indian hockey team in Olympic qualifiers

Eight-times champions India face a desperate fight to avoid missing the Olympics for the first time when they embark on the men's qualifying tournament in Santiago, Chile on Saturday.
A formidable force during a bygone era, India expect to find former champions Britain their biggest threat in the second of three qualifiers, with only the winner progressing to the Beijing Games in August.
Austria, Mexico, Russia and hosts Chile round off the field for the competition in Santiago.
It would be disastrous for India as well as Olympics romantics if India fail to qualify, although Britain, ranked a step higher than their Asian rivals in the world, have done better of late.
Gold medallists in 1988, Britain were fifth at the 2006 World Cup in Germany where India slumped to 11th, a slide that includes seventh place finishes in the last two Olympics.

Saif-Bebo's Flight of Love

When it comes to ideas that keep the magic in the romance alive, Saif Ali Khan never seems to fall short. After plying his girlfriend Kareena with the biggest and brightest diamonds (last count: two huge solitaires for her fingers, one tennis bracelet and a pair of diamond earrings, all worth around a crore each ), the Chhote Nawab of Pataudi has decided to attain greater heights in love. I have been told Saif has chartered a private jet this weekend for his lady love. [IN PICS: Kareena Shows off Saif's ring] The cosy couple intend to profess undying love to each other at a height of 35,000 feet, as the jet flies over to sun-kissed Goa. There were rumours that Saif would ask Bebo to marry her on this Flight Of Love, but I have been told that is certainly not the case. But sources close to the couple are definitely excited and amused at the idea. Why go through all the hassle just to fly down to Goa? Unless of course you have something special in mind. Love, as they say, can make you do strange things

Dutt’s Goa wedding is off

The Sanjay Dutt-Manyata marriage proceedings of February 7 in Goa stand cancelled after the couple submitted affidavits saying they wished to withdraw proceedings in Goa. The couple were later married under Hindu rites in Mumbai. Controversy dogged the paper work they submitted before a Goa sub-registrar, resulting in an inquiry into a six-month residence certificate Manyata Dilnashin Ahmed Sheikh submitted here.
On Wednesday, the couple’s advocate submitted a joint affidavit to the marriage sub-registrar. The affidavit stated they wished to withdraw registration proceedings in Goa. It said they had wanted to register their marriage under the Special Marriages Act of 1954 but later learnt the act had not been extended to Goa. Sanjay Dutt did not want to comment on the latest development beyond saying, “Manyata and I will address the press at the right time,” while his friend and marriage witness, Bunty Walia, said, “This is the price you pay for being a celebrity.”
Goa still continues civil marriage proceedings under the Portuguese Civil Code of 1867. With the joint affidavit, the couple’s intent-to-marry proceedings stand cancelled, marriage sub-registrar Chandrakant Pissurlekar told mediapersons. Proceedings here go through two stages, an intent to marry and a second formal marriage registration after 10 days. Sanjay Dutt and Manyata had gone through the first stage on February 7.
Meanwhile, questions about her residence certificate will come up on March 7, the date fixed for a showcause hearing before a quasi-judicial government official. In questions that came up over the veracity of her six-month residence certificate, Manyata had been asked to show cause why the certificate should not be revoked.

Great gadgets game goes online this year

Try this gadget mantra for 2008 - go online, or go fishing. Might as well use your offline gizmos as bait. The fish, being dumber, might just bite!At least that's what the gadgets for 2008 seem to suggest. Most gizmos - and not just phones and notebooks - are now being judged not only by whether they can go online but what they do once they get there. For folks living in India, the phone to own would certainly be iPhone (about $500), when Apple launches it in the country this year. For notebooks, the keywords are accessorise, accessorise, accessorise. A good way of doing that would be Slingbox Solo ($190). This nifty little utility allows you to watch your television anywhere in the world, on your laptop or mobile phone.Solo is a streaming device that connects to equipment such as your digital video recorder (DVR), satellite system or cable box to deliver high quality TV signals anywhere in the world. Watching your favourite shows while travelling around the world can't be a bad idea. The solo's easy-to-use software, SlingPlayer, also allows laptop users to watch their favourite programmes and use applications like MS Office at the same time. Bosses, beware. For TV watchers, LCD or plasma has just become skinny with the super-slim OLED (organic light-emitting diode) TVs that Sony and Samsung have started flaunting around. Expect a commercial launch this year. A TV with YouTube built-in is not too far off either.Video also seems headed for portable media players. Now that downloading movies off the net has become so quick and easy, more and more people will be investing in them. Philips, Jukebox and other players have come up with flash-memory based personal media players (around $200), which are hot buys with 3.5-inch screens, built-in speakers and five-hour video lives.Meanwhile, digital media adapters (around $200), designed to let you enjoy music, pictures, and video on the PC and laptop on TV, are rapidly gaining popularity. In many cases, these smart set-top boxes, like the SlingCatcher, can also deliver content directly from the web.On the imaging front, your digital camera and camcorder need no longer be stranded from the net. The EyeFi Card ($100) has arrived, which lets you upload stills or footage directly to Flickr, Facebook, Twitter or what have you.The just-announced Belkin Bluetooth USB Adapter ($40) with a picture upload technology is another example of the "get-your-digital-stuff-online" trend. It uploads camera phone photos to your PC and then to services like Kodak Gallery, Facebook and MySpace.Digital photo frames are also becoming a worthy buy. Coming in varying sizes, the one that leads the pack is Photoskin by Emtrace Technologies. The size of a credit card, it features a 2.5" high definition LCD display, 128 MB memory and 64 MB SDRAM.With it you can upload your favourite photos or display a variety of widgets, such as weather, news and more. The widgets are only functional when Photoskin sits on the included cradle and is connected to a computer. For printing, nothing now holds a candle to the "Zink" paper enabled Polaroid mobile photo printer. The new-age Polaroid, slightly larger than a pack of cards, carries no toner, ribbon or ink.Instead, the connected camera heats colour spectrum crystals embedded within the 2-inch x 3-inch zero-ink paper to bring the high-quality image to the surface. Like the Polaroid before it, this gadget has the potential of changing how we take and print digital photos. With so many portable goodies, charging could be a nightmare. Charger pads with the right adapters could make life so much easier. The leader on this front seems to be the Wildcharger "wireless charging station" (about $100).A flat charging pad that will charge any compatible device - up to five at a time - without the use of any wires sounds tempting. This much-admired invention of 2007 could make it big in the market this year. Various adapters cost extra, though. In the wireless scene, a Bluetooth speaker system is where the action is. This brand new device receives and plays music wirelessly from any Bluetooth-enabled player or phone.Let's round up the list of hot gadgets with the Kindle ($400), launched late last year by Amazon. The handy wireless reading devices that can download and hold over 200 book titles could become all the rage this year.Kindle stays charged for as much as a week. It also includes exclusive subscriptions to top US and international newspapers and magazines, 250 blogs, e-mail capability and Wikipedia access. So that's how electronic paper looks. The cloud is now truly the king. We want the whole web, and we want it now

Dia Mirza freezes in the cold…

Recently while shooting an item number for her good friend Ashu Trikha’s film ‘Zindagi Tere Naam’ in Jaipur, Dia Mirza had a tough time as the temperature was as low as 2 degree Celsius.
The song was being shot at Sisodia Gardens in Jaipur for almost four nights. While the remaining crew was dressed up in warm clothes, skimpily dressed Dia had to run for cover as soon as the shot got over.
The breeze was very cold but still Dia continued with the shot as Ashu is not only her dear friend but also the director of her first film Deewanapan. That was the first time she faced the camera and so she is ready to repay him.
Now that’s what true friendship means.

Serial Kisser smooched!

And all this happened much to the disgust of music director Pritam Chakraborty. The appalled musician has reportedly said that if all this was a rehearsed event then the show was nothing but digging its own grave.
All this commotion happened during the recording of the ‘Voice of India’ show held on February 25, Monday. As the shooting was going on an over enthused fan ran to the center stage and kissed Emraan Hashmi right on his lips much to the shock and disgust of others present. The judge and composer Pritam expressed his disgust by staging a walkout of the show.
Thinking back on the event Pritam is believed to have said that the entire episode happened so fast and suddenly in a show that was showcasing children’s talent. The music director is of view that such explosive behavior should be curtailed in public.
Pritam is believed to have made his stand very clear by saying that ‘Voice of India’ is a very potential show and that it has produced very deserving winners, and he did not want this show to just bank on TRPs alone like a lot of other ordinary music shows.
Emraan, for you we suggest you better wear a helmet while you go to such shows in future.

Aamir flaunts his six-pack

Now, for some news from the perfectionist.
Aamir Khan has always surprised us with his perfection. After directing ‘Taare Zameen Par’ and winning the Filmfare best director award in his debut venture the director is all concentration for his next yet-to-be-titled film which is the remake of the Tamil super hit ‘Ghajini’.
Aamir had shot for a song in this film, for a month, in South Africa sporting the much-hyped six pack abs. The actor lost the six-pack in course of time and was even believed to have put on some weight. But then it seems Aamir was supposed to complete that song from the Film City recently.
When the director Murugadoss saw that Aamir’s physique was much different from how it was a couple of months back while shooting in South Africa wanted the actor to get back his six-pack. It is believed that Aamir requested the director for a span of 21 days to get back the original look for the song.
And this perfectionist, very true to his words, was back in three weeks with the six-pack abs. Aamir not only does the job but also has a habit for doing it the best possible way. The happy director shot the remaining part of the song in four days.
This film is set to hit theatres by October this year and it co-stars Asin the most wanted south Indian belle from Kerala.

Dravid says IPL's success depends on first year

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is being perceived as the beginning of a lucrative new era for cricket, but former India captain Rahul Dravid says its success and impact on the game will depend on how it produces top class cricket in the first year."IPL is something new. It is going to be quite exciting and in the first year there is going to be a lot of interest.Obviously after that, it is really going to depend on how it picks up. I think the quality of cricket is important," Dravid said in an exclusive interview."Because, people who come to watch (the matches) are going to expect good standard of cricket. At the end of the day, this (good cricket) is what would make IPL a success or failure. It is upto the players, both domestic and international, to provide that," the captain of Royal Challengers, the Bangalore team owned by business tycoon Vijay Mallya.Asked if the IPL was good for cricket in the long run, Dravid said "I think only time will tell."The Bangalore icon player, who would earn more than Rs 4 crore in the first season from a maximum 10 matches, refused to buy the argument that IPL was all about money and said people should look at whether it gives the fans entertainment and good quality cricket."It is going to be about cricket. People want to see good standard of cricket. At the end of the day, it (good cricket) is going to be the most important," he said when asked whether money or cricket was at the forefront in the IPL. Dravid also feels that the price of players at the auction on Wednesday was not the true reflection of the capability of a player and the "limitations and certain rules" of the auction was the reason why a big star like Ricky Ponting got less than others."I don't think you have to look at what one player got at the auction and compare it with other players and say it is the actual value or performance level of the player based on what he got at the auction. Because the auction had certain rules, limitations and certain combinations. So, I don't think you can judge it (the worth of a player) like that." The great merit of the IPL, according to Dravid, was the opportunity the domestic players, other than the BCCI-contracted players, would get by rubbing shoulders with some great players in the 44-day competition to be played in Twenty20 format."IPL is a domestic competition and it is about giving Indian players an opportunity to play in the big stage with some great players in the world," Dravid said.Explaining how the IPL would benefit the players of the domestic circuit, he said, "In the playing XI, there will be seven Indian players and apart from the 35-40 BCCI-contracted players (like me), there will be at least 40-50 other domestic players in the eight teams." "I am sure out of this 40-50 domestic players, 15-20 are going to get a chance to be in the first XI and play with or against some great players. That itself should be exciting," Dravid said."So, it is a domestic competition with international flavour and that is what we should not forget," he added.Dravid was also happy that the domestic circuit has more money now than it had earlier."I think there is quite a lot of money in domestic cricket as compared to earlier days. What the boys are being paid now for playing Ranji Trophy is lot more than paid five years ago. But, we need to make domestic cricket more professional and we have to encourage cricketers playing in domestic circuit," he added.

Biggest quake hits UK

An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.2 on the richter scale hit Britain early on Wednesday morning. The largest earthquake in 24 years struck at 12.56 am and its epicentre was 8 km east of Market Rasen in Lincolnshire, according to the British Geological Survey. The earthquake was felt widely across England, with reports of damage to chimneys in the area near epicentre.
"The is a significant earthquake for the UK and will have been widely felt across England and Wales," seismologist, Dr Brian Baptie of the British Geological Survey, said. Although there were no reports of any injuries, the Association of British Insurers said that the cost of damage to homes and property is likely to be more than £10 million. The worst-hit area near the epicentre was Grimsby in northeast Lincolnshire. Other areas which suffered significant property damage include Cleethorpes, Goole, Bridlington and Hull. Wednesday’s earthquake was the largest in the UK since the Lleyn peninsula earthquake in 1984, which recorded a magnitude of 5.4.

Single men are sexiest for fertile wives

Women’s sexual preferences change over the course of their menstrual cycle, with partnered women being most attracted to single men during their fertile stage, according to a new study.
Researchers at the University of Padua in Italy suggest that partnered women, who want to have an affair or even think about having a fling, subconsciously choose single men when they are fertile. On the other hand, their attraction shifts to coupled men when they become infertile.
The researchers say that women select a man who is more likely to be a willing partner when they are fertile.
They explain that having an affair with a coupled man may be both a waste of time, and risky, as there is a greater chance of getting caught.
“Ancestral women who felt more attracted to a single man than to an already coupled one would have been more likely than others to succeed and transmit this preference to their daughters,” Nature quoted Paola Bressan of the University of Padua in Italy, as saying

Gold hits new high, touches Rs 12,460

Soaring crude oil prices and falling dollar pushed gold to an all-time high of Rs 12,460 per 10 gram, up Rs 325, in the bullion market on Wednesday. Silver also shone to a 27-year record high level of Rs 23,600 per kg enhancing its appeal as a hedge against inflation.
The rally in precious metal prices were triggered by the reports of the crude touching an unprecedented high of $102 a barrel and the greenback falling to an all-time low against euro. The global trend, which normally sets prices in domestic bullion markets, is closely linked with the forex market and moves in the opposite direction of the US dollar.
Gold surged in London by $14.52 to $962.67 an ounce, while in futures trading, it rose to a record $964.7, up $15.8. Silver followed suit and added 60 cents to $19.36 an ounce, highest since October 1980. Both metals created new records as the US dollar fell to an all-time low against the euro on speculation that the US Fed Reserve Chairman, Mr Ben Bernanke, may indicate lowering interest rates. The United States currency touched 1.5047 per euro, its lowest since 1999, the year in which the single European currency was introduced.

Cigarette, beedi packets will now depict death

The government has given the go-ahead for the implementation of pictorial warnings on cigarette and beedi packets ending a long-drawn debate on its feasibility.
The pictorial warnings could be either a scorpion or lungs, a Group of Ministers, convened to decide on carrying pictorial warnings, decided in its conclusive meeting on Tuesday.
"Pictorial warnings are coming and what pictures would be carried would be decided by the Chairman of the GoM in a couple of days," Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss said.
The total coverage area for the picture would be either 30 per cent or 40 per cent of the pack. Earlier, 50 per cent of the total packet was to be covered by the pictorial warnings.
"The size, colour and what picture is to be carried would be decided by the end of this week by the Chairperson of the Group of Ministers," Information and Broadcasting Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi said after the meeting.

Indian workers jailed in Dubai for strike

Indian workers jailed in Dubai for strike
Forty-five Indian workers have been sentenced to six months in jail followed by deportation for indulging in violent protests demanding better salaries.''This is a first-of-a-kind ruling. There are legal channels and legitimate methods for workers, who deem they are underpaid, to claim their rights instead of rioting violently and unlawfully,'' Judge Jasem Baqer, head of the Dubai Criminal Court, told the Gulf News newspaper.''Workers should resort to the concerned authorities to claim their rights and not through violent rioting,'' said Baqer. The workers were found guilty of endangering public security, damaging properties and inciting other workers to strike work late last year. The newspaper report said court records showed some of the accused confessed to organising the strikes by distributing pamphlets in labour camps.

Wife kept Gilly playing

The Australian cricketers may have grabbed the rewards but their wives were the topics of discussion at the Allan Border Medal function held in Melbourne on Tuesday night. Australian captain Ricky Ponting revealed that his wife of six years Rianna is expecting their first child. She is 14 weeks pregnant. “It’s great to have her as a big part of my life. She’s really been a great support for me, given up a lot of things (in) her own life to be around and help me out through my own cricket career,” Ponting said.

Adam Gilchrist would have retired from international cricket long ago had it not been for the advice of wife Melissa, who coaxed him into re-thinking his decision after Gilchrist was ready to hang up his gloves at the end of last summer’s Ashes series against England.
“Adam was just so worn out, so, so tired, and it took a lot out of him,” Melissa told the Australian Women’s Weekly. “When he told me then we was thinking of retiring, I just felt that he needed to rest and build himself back up before he made such a critical decision. And, as a result, he stayed on,” she said. Melissa said that when her husband eventually did announce he would call it quits during the Adelaide Test last month, she was certain the timing was right. “When he rang this time from Adelaide and said, ‘Do you know what? I think I’m done,’ I just said, ‘Yes, go for it, that sounds so right.’”

Sanjay, Manyata withdraw Goan marriage notice

Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt and his wife Manyata have filed a joint declaration with South Goa's registration authorities seeking withdrawal of their marriage declaration.South Goa's Salcette Sub Registrar's office said that both have filed a joint declaration stating that they do not desire to solemnise their marriage under the Portuguese Civil Code, 1867.The duo in their affidavit has said that they have been informed that marriage in Goa is governed by the Portuguese Civil Code, 1867. Both have declared that they intended to get married as per the Special Marriage Act, 1954.''We are now informed that this Act is not extended to the state of Goa,'' the declaration reads. With a desire to revoke and withdraw their declaration of marriage, the duo has said the documents annexed therewith be treated as withdrawn and cancelled from all legal effect.Sanjay Dutt and Manyata had filed a declaration before Salcette Sub Registrar Chandrakant Pissurlekar on February seven. The declaration, which was marred with controversy and allegation of forgery, was supposed to be confirmed within 90 days. The authorities, who prima facie found that the Goa residence certificate given by Manyata was questionable, had kept the marriage registration on hold after suspending the certificate. The South Goa district administration had also issued show cause notice to Manyata asking her why her certificate should not be cancelled.Even as Manyata's residence certificate was being probed, the joint declaration seeking withdrawal of marriage has came unexpectedly for the authorities.

Sonia's dream job project fails in her constituency

The pocket borough of the Gandhi family, Rae Bareilly, was supposed to be the star constituency of the NREGA (National Rural Employment Guarantee Act). But CNN-IBN has found that almost half of the villagers do not have job cards, without which they have no employment proof.
According to the villagers, their job cards have been taken by the village pradhan. “My job card is with the pradhan. I have asked for it again and again. I don't know why he does not give it to me,” a daily wager at Attakpurva, Babu Khan said.
While another daily wageworker Shyam Kali complained, “When I asked he said what do you want to do with the card.”
There is no reason why the surrogate pradhan should hold on to the cards unless he wants to fill it up with up with fictitious figures. And this suspicion was seconded by work site supervisor Mohammed Umar Khan who said, “The pradhan has the cards. I don't know why he does not give it to the people. He could be bungling on the records.”
For a daily wager the only record of the work done is in the hands of the pradhan with no signature or even a thumbprint of any of the villagers.

Hayden let off with just a warning

Matthew Hayden has been let off by Australia’s cricket authorities with a reprimand on Wednesday, a day after the big opener called Harbhajan Singh an ‘obnoxious little weed’ and challenged the lanky Ishant Sharma to a boxing bout.
A Cricket Australia Code of Conduct Commission hearing in Melbourne upheld a charge that Hayden has breached the CA Code of Behaviour Rule 9 relating to detrimental public comment. “Code of Conduct Commissioner Ron Beazley issued a reprimand of Hayden as penalty for the breach,” a statement released by CA read.
The charge was made by CA chief executive James Sutherland following Hayden’s comments during a Brisbane Radio interview. It was the fallout of on-field skirmishes between Indian and Australian cricketers throughout the series. Right from the Sydney Test both players have taken potshots at each other frequently.

King’ to be launched on April 7

Nagarjuna’s next film King will officially be launched on April 7. Though Sreenu Vaitla is very busy finishing off Ready, he is trying his best to concentrate on King simultaneously.
News is that Kona Venkat and Gopi Mohan are giving the final touches to the script right now. The film as we had reported will be an entertainer.
After a long time, Nagarjuna will be dancing to the tunes of Devisri Prasad. They had earlier worked together for ‘Manmadhudu’.

Jalsa’ to release with maximum prints abroad

America, UK, Singapore, Dubai, Canada, Malaysia, Australia… ‘Jalsa’, say the Geeta Arts reps will be the first Telugu film that will release with the maximum number of prints in all the above mentioned countries.
The film too has been made on a very huge budget. Apparently, the house set has been erected with Rs 1 crore and a set for a song has been put up with Rs 70 lakh.
Given that the music is already a rage, after the songs had been leaked on to the Net, there are high expectations from the film.
Another highlight, say the makers, is the presence of three heroines opposite Pawan Kalyan.

Mamata’s weight dilemma

Acting in multiple productions is no less than doing a trapeze act. If it is a singer-cum-actress like Mamata Mohandas, then there bound to be many more complications.
For starters, date adjustment would be a huge issue, what with all producers wanting to complete their film at the earliest. Poor Mamata was caught in a tricky situation recently.
She was recently seen in Krishnarjuna opposite Vishnu. Apparently, director P Vasu was after her to put on some weight to make a good screen couple with Vishnu. On the other hand, she was shooting for another film where the hero is lanky.
So, the makers of that film insisted she shed weight to look right for the hero. Now, poor Mamata had to put on and shed off weight simultaneously.
Now doesn’t that sound nightmarish?

Deepkia headed for Splitsville

Reports have been moving across the media of a Deepika-Yuvraj break up. Rumours are also flowing in of a Deepika-Ranbir Kapoor patch up.
The reason for the break up with Yuvraj isn’t clear as yet. It has been reported that Yuvraj’s possessiveness is to blame for the split. Sources claim that Deepika too worked hard on her relationship with Yuvraj and was serious about her relationship. But the success of OSO got Deepika really busy and her shooting schedules prevented her from giving Yuvi all that attention.
It has also been reported that Deepika didn’t like Yuvi telling her what to wear and whom o party with etc. Also her growing proximity to Ranbir, as the two left for Australia for their next Yash Raj film was taking a toll on Yuvi.
To make things even worse Deepika would avoid picking Yuvi’s calls and was last seen holding hands with Ranbir Kapoor at Aqeel’s post Filmfare party.

Rakhi can’t stand Mika

Monday evening saw Rakhi Sawant make her presence at the Bingo Red Fm Bajaate Raho awards to cheer on boyfriend Abhishek Awasthi . The evening saw Abhishek all so pumped up making a dashing entry on a bike and grooving to hit numbers of Race, Dard-E-Disco etc. Though Abhishek couldn’t get the crowds thumping to his beats, Rakhi Sawant was seen volleying flying kisses right across.
The smile on Rakhi’s face didn’t last for long as the latter half of the evening saw Mika up on stage grooving with his Punjabi gang. The moment Mika’s name was announced the audience was on a high as they were assured of some foot tapping numbers. Rakhi couldn’t stand the sight of Mika that she dragged Abhishek along and headed for the exit.
Maybe Rakhi did make a wise move as the evening saw everyone raving about Mika as he went on performing beyond his quota of songs. Mika went on a complete public demand format. The audience were grooving to hits numbers like ‘Ganpat’ , ‘Mauja Mauja’ and a few more tracks.
Mika was even witty as he kept telling the audiences to get grooving or else he would “take a pappi(Kiss)”.

Priyanka denies getting anorexic

We have all heard this one. With co-stars like Mugdha Ghodse and Kangana Ranaut it was out in the papers a few weeks back that Priyanka was asked by the director of this film ‘Fashion’ to reduce her weight.
But the lady has quashed all rumors leading that way by coming out that, no one has asked her to slim down for her role in the film ‘Fashion’. She has also said that this is one of the most insensible stories that she has heard in a long time.
This Bollywood beauty has also made it clear that she shares a good rapport with the ‘Fashion ’director Madhur Bhandarkar. Priyanka is all set for Karan Johar’s next that stars Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham in the lead role. The actress has also reportedly told that her look for ‘Fashion’ was a well-toned look and she would be flaunting the same look in KJ’s film too.
Priyanka has also made it clear that she is not the ‘anorexic’ figure type and does not support such looks. She says one does not look beautiful when they are too thin. She feels that Indian women are naturally beautiful. They are well-proportioned and ‘aesthetically endowed’ in all the right places, and by becoming too thin one is going against nature.
It is just that Priyanka has worked out for a well-toned look rather than an anorexic, too thin kind of look.
Beauty with brains Priyanka is! She sure knows what look suits her best.

Scottish Premier League

Celtic and Rangers have once again emerged as the top two teams in the Scottish League, but Hibernian and Dundee United – both with 26 points from 14 matches going into December – are within striking distance. Celtic lead with 31 points from 13 matches, while Rangers have 28 from the same number of matches. The two must watch action this month is Celtic taking on Hibernian on December 22 and then Celtic up against Dundee United four days later.

French League

Lyon and Nancy are slowly making it a two-team battle for the league title in France. Lyon have 34 points from 15 matches, but Nancy can catch up with them with one win and they have played one match less. However, Lyon’s recent loss to the bottom half-placed Marseille proves that the two teams are not unbeatable. As for which team will be on top in the New Year, watch out for the mother of all battles when Nancy take on Lyon on December 22.

UEFA Champions League

Ten Sports, the most watched sports channel of the sub-continent, will bring live action from four of the biggest European clubs – English Premier League leaders Arsenal, defending Premiership champions Manchester United, Chelsea and the ever-powerful Spanish outfit Real Madrid – as it continues its coverage of the high-profile UEFA Champions League.

Sachin doesn't need others' brains

Sachin Tendulkar has not been in the best of touch in the ongoing tri-series, but the master batsman said he was not concerned about “overreaction from too many brains” about his form.
Tendulkar, who has scored 191 runs from eight innings so far, said he was hitting the ball well and his confidence level has not gone down.
“I scored in the 30s twice against Sri Lanka and 40-odd against Australia. I failed only in the last three innings. It is a case of too may brains working (over my form),” he said after hitting a sizzling 54-ball 63 in India’s seven-wicket victory over Sri Lanka today.
“I am all right and hitting the ball well. I am confident and the team is confident. The normal tendency is people get carried away because of more expectations. People should not react more than what is necessary,” he added.
Today’s win ensures that India face Australia in the best of three finals starting in Sydney on March 2.
Tendulkar emphasised the need for the top order to fire if they have to turn the tables against the world champions.
The top order has been the Achilles’ heel for India, largely annulling the fine show by the young bowlers so far in the series.
“We have to ensure that we do not lose early wickets against Australia. Only then we have a chance to beat them.
“We have to plan our strategies for the finals. Brett Lee has been bowling well, I think we have to work out how to tackle him.”
Tendulkar said the team is confident of doing well against the Australians.
“We were down 51 for four (in the last match) and the boys came back fantastically to come closer to the target and score nearly 300.”
He was all praise of the young bowlers who have been spot on in the series so far.
“They have doing a good job. Today also, we thought the pitch would do something early in the Lankan innings but it turned out to be an easy wicket. The young pacers bowled at the right areas and bundled them out for a paltry score.”
On his “uncharacteristic” dismissal today while trying to hit Muttiah Muralitharan inside out, Tendulkar said he played the shot on earlier occasions against the same bowler but was done in this time by the lack of spin in the delivery.
“I picked his (Murali’s) doosra. I thought of hitting it inside out over the extra cover. Because of the hardness of the pitch, the ball did not turn much and I held out,” he said

US advises Nawaz not to oppose Musharraf

Don't oppose President Musharraf, US Ambassador to Pakistan, Anne Patterson has advised Nawaz Sharif.
The advice was conveyed when Patterson called on Sharif in Islamabad on Monday.
She described Musharraf as a great US ally in the war on terror, but Sharif told her the war on terror needed to be re-defined.
He said the new political forces could not work with Musharraf and blamed him for the crisis facing the country.
He said he would not oppose the PPP's plans to form a government, but his party was yet to decide whether to work as a friendly opposition or join the government

Tips to tackle pressure during Board exams

With Board exams around the corner testing times are here again for students as well as parents. While some students perform better under pressure, others totter. So, where should parents draw the line?
Gifty, a student, has been burning the midnight oil to pass with flying colours in his class 10 board exams.
“There are these phone calls saying I'm studying for eight to 10 hours. We start to think that they are studying for 10 hours and why am I not studying that much,” a visibly worried Gifty Kurien said.
Inspite of being a topper Gifty’s mother Marianne is constantly under pressure that her son lives upto everyone's expectations.
“Everyone is asking how much percentage he is expecting to get, so if he does not come up to everyone's expectations we will be very depressed,” Mariama said.

Reliance Power dangles carrot, issues bonus shares

Reliance Power has now come out with its much-awaited bonus share issue after its poor listing on the Bombay Stock Exchange.
On February 11, within minutes of the Reliance Power listing, the share was beaten below the issue price of Rs 450 and more than 42 lakh retail investors saw their hard earned money going down the drain.
But in a masterstroke aimed at keeping investors happy Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (ADAG) Chairman Anil Ambani has now sought to give it back to them.
"The board has approved an issuance of free bonus shares in the ratio of three is to five. That means for every five shares you hold, you will receive three shares each," Anil Ambani announced
For the retail investors it means a reduction in the cost of acquisition by 40 per cent from the IPO listing price. Now, each Reliance Power share will cost 269 rupees per share.

Hillary challenges Obama for Ohio

Hillary Rodham Clinton angrily accused her Democratic rival on Saturday of deliberately misrepresenting her positions on NAFTA and health care in mass mailings to voters, adding, ''Shame on you, Barack Obama.''Clutching two of Obama campaign mailings in her hand for emphasis, the former first lady said, ''enough with the speeches and the big rallies and then using tactics that are right out of Karl Rove's playbook.''Obama defended the mailings as accurate and rejected Clinton's complaint as a political ploy. He said that despite her current criticism of NAFTA, she supported the trade agreement when it passed during her husband's administration. The long distance clash erupted as the two Democrats campaigned separately across Ohio, one of two big states with primaries on March 4.Obama has won 11 straight primaries and caucuses, and some of Clinton's supporters have said she must win both Ohio and Texas next week to keep her hopes alive of winning the party nomination. Recent polls show Ohio is close, and Texas closer.Clinton's frustration was evident as she criticized Obama in unusually strong terms - a few days after ending a nationally televised debate by saying she was ''honored to be here with'' him in a historic race between a black man and a woman. She said by his actions, Obama was giving ''aid and comfort to the very special interests and their allies in the Republican Party who are against doing what we want to do for America.''''Meet me in Ohio,'' she said. ''Let's have a debate about your tactics and your behavior in this campaign.'' The two are scheduled to debate next Tuesday in Cleveland. In her criticism of Obama, she asked, ''Since when do Democrats attack one another on universal health care?''Obama had a ready reply to that. ''Well, when she started to say I was against universal health care ... which she does every single day,'' he said.Since late last year, Clinton has consistently attacked Obama's health care plan, saying it would leave 15 million Americans uninsured.Clinton's advisers have repeatedly criticised the Obama campaign's mailings, both of which went out in the last several days.

Hayden calls Harbhajan 'obnoxious little weed'

Days before their best-of-three final in the CB Series, Matthew Hayden has added fuel to the raging fire between India and Australia, calling spinner Harbhajan Singh an "obnoxious little weed".
The rivalry has again been sparked off after an incident during Sunday's game between the two sides, for which Indian fast bowler Ishant Sharma was summoned by the match referee for having allegedly abused Andrew Symonds after taking his wicket in Sydney.
And while India were busy ensuring their spot in the final in their last game against Sri Lanka, the Australian opener told Brisbane Radio, "It's been a bit of a long battle with Harbhajan, the first time I ever met him he was the same little obnoxious weed that he is now."
"His record speaks for itself in cricket. There is a certain line that you can kind of go to and then you know where you push it and he just pushes it all the time."
"That's why he has been charged more than anyone that's ever played in the history of cricket," Hayden added

Pak blocks YouTube for 'blasphemous' web content

Pakistan has blocked access to the popular video-sharing website Youtube for alleged ''blasphemous'' content. The Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) has directed all the Internet service providers of the country to block access to Youtube, media reported in Islamabad. The order, issued by the director of the enforcement agency, claimed the ratio of ''non-Islamic objectionable video'' has increased on the website.''The site would remain blocked till further orders from the PTA,'' a local ISP worker told the Daily Times. Some ISPs have also asked the users to write to the youtube.com administrators to ''remove the objectionable web content/movies because this removal would enable the authorities to order un-blocking of this website.''Local media cited different reasons for the government move, some referring to a trailer from Dutch politician Geert Wilders' controversial anti-Islam movie that is available on the site. There were also reports that the website contained a controversial cartoon of the Prophet Mohammed reprinted by 17 Danish newspapers earlier this month. The ban also sparked speculation on mailing lists and blogs, and people wondered whether the blackout was connected to some other videos that had been uploaded to the site, implicating a certain political party in ''election rigging''.International media rights watchdog Reporters Without Borders condemned the decision, saying it regards the measure as ''disproportionate''.

ADAG buys mobile firm in Uganda

Reliance Communications Limited, promoted by Anil Ambani, has acquired the Uganda-based Anupam Global Soft Limited — a company holding a public infrastructure provider license (PIPL) and public service provider license (PSPL) issued by the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) agency. This is RCom’s first acquisition, in the international mobile market. Reliance Communications will offer mobile, fixed line, internet, national and international long distance services. The company will also provide WiMax and Wifi services in Uganda under the existing licenses. This company has received spectrum allocation and plans to launch its mobile services by the end of 2008. Uganda has a total population of around 30 million and there were 3.016 million mobile subscribers by end-March 2007 (source: UCC).
This is equivalent to a penetration rate of 10 per cent providing ample scope of expansion, the company said. The existing telecom players have been witnessing healthy subscriber and ARPU growth recently. The Reliance Communications Group will invest up to $500 million or Rs 2,000 crore in establishing a high-quality, fully IP-enabled integrated telecom network in Uganda, to capture the significant growth potential in the emerging African market. Mr Punit Garg, president, global business, Reliance Communications said the company plans to connect the African continent with the rest of the world by laying a submarine cable system through its arm Reliance FLAG and plans to spend $1.5 billion or Rs 6,000 crore in building a 1,15,000-kilometre fully IP-enabled optic network to reach two-thirds of the world population. The opportunities emerging in the Asian and African markets are predicted to be Reliance Communications’ hunting ground for its global expansion plans.

Rain halts play with Lanka in troubled waters

Heavy downpour halted play at the MCG with Sri Lanka on 77-4 in 29.3 overs after being set a target of 185 by Australia. At this stage, the visitors are 24 runs behind the score that would have won them the match according to the Duckworth Lewis method.
Sri Lanka got off to a disastrous start losing Sanath Jayasuriya in the second over. A wide slash off Stuart Clark when the batsman was yet to get off the mark, provided Ricky Ponting a regulation catch at second slip. Clark struck again in his next over, trapping Dilruwan Perera leg-before for one.
The visitors were in a spot of bother at 3-2 in the fourth over and were forced to turn once again to their most reliable pair of Kumar Sangakkara and captain Mahela Jayawardene to bail them out. The duo strung a 39-run stand with Jayawardene doing the bulk of the scoring. The skipper struck three boundaries in his knock before a lapse in concentration led to his undoing. Jayawardene, on 23, chased a wide one from Mitchell Johnson, giving Adam Gilchrist a simple catch to bring the prosperous partnership to an end.
Sangakkara departed soon for 22 as he top edged a James Hopes delivery and Andrew Symonds gulped the skier.
Chamara Silva, who got off to an extremely slow start, was batting on 16 while Tillekeratne Dilshan gave him company on nine when it started pouring at the MCG.
In the Australian innings, the top order failed to make a mark yet again in the CB series with Sri Lanka strangling the home-side to restrict them to 184-7.
Barring Michael Hussey and Michael Clarke, the Aussies failed to show stomach for the battle on a difficult pitch. The duo bailed out the Aussies from a precarious position around the 20-over mark.
Sri Lanka reaped the rewards of some disciplined bowling combined with tight fielding after putting Australia in. The Aussies were scuffled right from the start of their innings and soon panic struck. With only 12 runs in four overs, Adam Gilchrist stepped down the wicket to heave one over the 30-yard circle but Chaminda Vaas hit the stumps to send back the southpaw for six.
Matthew Hayden and Ricky Ponting, both short of runs in the series, hung around for a while with the run-rate hovering around just two runs per over. Australia were crawling rather uncharacteristically and Farveez Maharoof decided to get into the act to aggravate their woes further.

Aussies may hit Pak hurdle in IPL

: ccAustralia’s tour of Pakistan still hangs in a balance as CA is awaiting a report from analysts on the security situation in Pakistan in the wake of recent widespread violence. “There will be lots of safety and security measures put in place and there will be all sorts of security checks done throughout Pakistan over the next few weeks to let us know as a player group if it is safe to tour or not. If it’s seen to be safe and you don’t go, then I think that’s where the breach of your contract would be,” Ponting said.Andrew Symonds had said earlier that he would not tour Pakistan before coming up with “the door is still ajar” on Thursday. “Andrew’s been pretty public about a lot of his views over the Pakistan tour in the last few weeks.
“The rest of us have all got our concerns, CA have obviously got their concerns. I just think it was a little bit unfortunate he was out doing a promotional appearance just before the auction took place yesterday. And it is not the first time he has said it, he said it earlier in the year as well. We all understand his feelings about touring Pakistan,” Ponting said.

Dynamic Dhoni has come a long way

That was evident in the match against Sri Lanka on Tuesday in Adelaide when the captain tangoed with the tail as he cut out risks to score an uncharacteristic boundary-less 50. In fact, the hard-hitter, who has got most of his runs batting high up the order, has demoted himself in the line-up to ensure the youngsters are deliberately slotted ahead so that they get to spend more time in the middle. “They are doing a good job and have played a couple of beautiful innings,” he says of Gautam Gambhir and Rohit Sharma, who had been among the runs in the ongoing CB Series.
“It’s important to let the newcomers bat up the order so that they get to spend longer time in the middle. “We also have to make sure they’re not dropped from the side as these are the guys for the future. Once they cement their places and gain the confidence, they can be shuffled in the batting order,” he says explaining his selfless approach. “They are on a learning curve, it’s now a matter of being consistent at the international level,” he observes.
Being captain, the modest Mahi seems comfortable with the consistent load being dumped on his shoulders. “It’s a privilege to bat under pressure. That’s the time when you can really become a hero,” is his stunning reply. “You need a bit of experience in the middle order where I can push myself,” Dhoni says in defence of the youngsters who can be exposed to severe pressure should the blue chip players get out to a occasional rash shot. In doing so, he plays the role of mother hen so protective of her chicks.
Sometimes, the protection is extended to the grown-ups too as in the case of Yuvraj Singh, whom Dhoni backed to the hilt when the vice-captain was looking out of sorts for most part of the tour. His persistence helped the left-handed batsman snatch his old form and regain balance in the side. Dhoni surely is the man of the moment.

Nitin, Kajal in Dubai

It’s still chilly in the Middle East and the Aatadista team is in Dubai to shoot some songs there. The idea is to avoid the summer heat, as the season will soon change there.

Nitin and Kajal are busy shifting locations for their songs.

The film is being produced by C Kalyan and AS Ravi Kumar Choudhary is directing it.

Another song will be shot in Hyderabad, once the unit returns to the city. The film also has Nagababu and Ravali making a comeback after a long time, playing important roles.

Charmme to do Kajra re for Rs 25 lakh?

It is a well-known fact that Tarun and Ileana are doing a Telugu version of ‘Bunty aur Babli’. The film is being directed by K Vijayabhaskar.

The latest tinsel ville gossip is that apparently, Charmme has been approached to do an item song in the film. However, the main news is that Charmme has quoted a cool Rs 25 lakh for doing the song.

Earlier, the names of Bipasha Basu and Nayanatara too had come up in this regard. However, Nayanatara couldn’t do it as she has just signed Rajini’s film.

After the ‘Maha maha’ number, looks like the makers feel Charmme will have the right jhatkas for the Telugu version of Kajra re.

The shooting of the song will be done in Hyderabad from March 6. A huge set is being erected for the shoot, which will take about three days.

Pamela Anderson’s Baring- Daring Act Recieves Warm Reception

Pamela Anderson’s stripping in the Le Crazy Saloon in Paris was said to be a great hit.

She says she never took a penny for the show.

Though the Crazy Horse specializes in presenting topless dancers, “It’s a celebration of women,” says Anderson. “It’s done very respectfully, very classy, and it’s a wonderful show for women as well as for men.”

“This isn’t for money,” said Anderson. “It’s just for the love of the art, and the Crazy Horse does it best.”

Wow I didn’t know roaming around topless is an art, something one can be passionate about.

Still, she noted, “They have to cover their costs. They flew me over here. And I am very high maintenance.”

Entering in just a sheer black body stocking, she made her appearance on the back of a motorcycle in front of 500 enthusiastic fans.

The guys were fascinated with this form of art wherein women go all bare. They were awestruck as Pamela revealed more than just her talents.

Britney Teaches Dance To Kids

Britney Spears was seen teaching dance to a group of 6 kids aged 4-7 years at the Millennium Dance Complex in North Hollywood, she taught the kids to dance on a song from Maddona’s hit list.

It came as a big surprise to the paparazzi, but not to the instructors and keepers of the Dance complex as britney was a student of that institute, and is still seen practicing there for her videos. She also dons the role of an Instructor at times.

Britney was seen playing with the children too. Maybe she misses her kids terribly and spending time with these kids brought out the best in her.

The paparazzi were expecting her to do something bizarre after her release from the psychiatric ward and were banking on every move of hers.

Britney also went shopping with her Mom with whom she was at loggerheads once upon a time. She also asked Mom’s approval before making the choice of her clothes ,once again taking the media at surprise.

The media expected both Mother and Daughter to not be on speaking terms and seeing this duo shopping together was a real shock to everybody.

Soon after, Britney got ready for another dance class where she instructed a group of 25 kids.
Robert Baker, director of the complex, states that the kids love Britney and are happy when she is around.

Well, Britney is taking all pain and effort to come back to normalcy after all the roller coaster ride of drugs, depression, divorce and legal rounds.

Kuddos to her!!!!! She is also coming up with her latest album very soon.

Jean Claude Van Damme’s daughter to act in Salman Khan’s Veer?

Vijay Galani’s Veer - directed by Gadar’s director, Anil Sharma - is a big budget extravaganza.

The film has been in news because of its hero - Salman Khan - charging a never-heard-before packet of Rs 25 crore as his fee, and also for writing the script.

Now, according to the latest gossip doing the rounds in B-Town, there is a strong possibility of Hollywood star Jean Claude Van Damme’s daughter starring in the film, in a crucial role!

“Yes she is here, but I wouldn’t want to talk about it. She is a big man’s daughter. Things arent’ finalized yet,” says director Anil Sharma.

Sharma isn’t willing to disclose anything about the film, except that, it’s a period film based in 1800 and Salman has been working hard on his physique.

It seems, he has to enhance his frame by one and a half times since he is playing a warrior, in the film.

Kaun Banega Crorepati? The one who slaps Raj

An outfit led by a Banaras Hindu University professor on Sunday announced a reward of Rs one crore to anyone who slaps Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray in public.
The North Indian-Marathi Unity Front floated by BHU political science professor Kaushal Kishore Mishra has also urged the people to come out in large numbers against the inflammatory statements made by Thackeray against north Indians and the "hooliganism" of MNS activists.
"Thackeray and his goons have committed heinous crime by killing innocent north Indians and Marathis just to establish his leadership," Mishra said in a statement here.
Another Front leader Ashok Pandey said the MNS chief "deserves to be publicly humiliated as he is trying to divide the country".
They then announced a Rs one crore reward for anyone slapping him in public

Rajputs warn of protests

A top delegation of the Akhil Bhartiya Kshatriya Mahasabha called on Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, Shivraj Singh Chauhan, at his residence on Monday to apprise him of the likelihood of increased tension in case Ashutosh Gowarikar’s magnum opus, Jodhaa Akbar, continued to be screened in cinema halls all over the state.
Members of the mahasabha complained that state police had forcefully dispersed their peaceful agitations at Indore and Ujjain, and slapped false cases against them. The body’s general secretary, Bhairon Singh Chauhan, told this newspaper that Gowariker had added insult to injury with his provocative remarks in a TV interview that more such films would be made if two-penny organisations kicked up a fuss over trifles.
“Gowarikar’s remarks are unfortunate. Someday he will repent.” Chauhan said, however, denied that the body had threatened to set on fire the halls where the film was being screened. A peaceful agitation was in danger of turning violent in case the sentiments of the Rajput community continued to be ignored. There was abundant historical evidence to establish that Rajput princesses preferred to commit “johar” (suicide) to avoid the ignominy of falling into the hands of the Mughals.

Every Rajput must watch Jodhaa Akbar: Gowarikar

It was perhaps the most awaited film of 2008 and it lived up to the expectations. Jodhaa Akbar has had its share of PR – good, bad and ugly. While the film wasn’t released in Rajasthan – after protests over its historical accuracy – voices of dissent are being heard in other cities as well.
But the opening weekend was good news for its producers. The film got a 70 per cent opening and the figures didn't drop over the weekend.
Jodhaa Akbar was made on Rs 40-crore budget and while it’s too early to predict if the movie will be a hit, director Ashutosh Gowarikar might just have the last laugh.
Gowarikar spoke with CNN-IBN on India at 9 on the various controversies that have kept his period drama in news

Man drags Indian Airlines to court over moustache

Joynath Victor De, a retired Indian Airlines employee, is so fond of his moustache that he is defending it in court after he says it lost him his job with the airline.
"I know I am up against a mighty organisation," De said by telephone from Kolkata. "But it has been my battle to retain my moustache for the last 10 years and I am going to see the end of it." This week, the Supreme Court asked Air India, whether the size of a person's moustache is valid grounds for dismissal, De and media reports said.
"I am from Benares, Uttar Pradesh, where a well-groomed moustache is a sign of a person's manliness and virility," De said, using the local name for the holy city of Varanasi. "There are other social reasons to consider as well. If a person suddenly shaves off his moustache then people automatically assume that there has been a death in the family," he said, referring to a Hindu tradition.
De joined Indian Airlines in 1968 as a flight steward and went on to become an assistant manager in 1994.
Trouble started when a 1998 circular required that airlines employees be clean-shaven and moustaches not exceed a certain size - De's moustache is wide and curly.

Allu Arjun is one cool guy!

Girls adore him. Now, we know why. Allu Arjun is a hardcore party animal and is seen clubbing all over town whenever he is in the city.
Today, at the launch of a film at Annapurna Studios, he was game to teach a newcomer a few steps. In fact, he took some time off to help Anish Tejeswar get some steps right.
Now, isn’t that really cool? Like many times, he came dressed in black and he looked dapper as always. Of course, we know black is never out of fashion.
But given that he is seen in black quite often, even for morning dos, we wonder if it is his favourite colour or if he is just playing safe

JLO is probably unaware of this fact, but her people are not taking any chances when it comes to the protection of her babies.

Guess it’s the Hospital’s biggest chance to advertise their services.

SRK will entertain Roshans!

Bollywood directors are exploring all genres in Bollywood cinema. From Romance to comedy to thriller, Bollywood has it all. Though there is a lot of cut-throat competition, there are some very healthy ones too.
One good example is Rakesh Roshan’s upcoming film ‘Krazzy 4’ with Juhi Chawla, Arshad Warsi, Irrfan Khan, Rajpal Yadav and Suresh Menon in the lead roles.
Even from the few stills that are out the film promises to be a roaring comic flick. Being directed by Rakesh Roshan’s assistant, Raja (Jaideep) Sen, the film is being keenly awaited. One main attraction apart from the star cast is an item number that will feature SRK in one part and the Roshan hero Hrithik in the other half. This song will be one of its kind because we very rarely get to see the same song in two different star versions.
King Khan had said in an interview that he had actually developed the much-omphed six pack abs for a song in ‘Om Shanthi Om’ but later stuck to it because he liked the look of it and also to prove to his son Aryan that he was not fat!
The six-pack must sure have come handy in this song for King Khan! It is reported that SRK’s part of the song has already been shot and Hrithik will shot for the same this month.
We will get to see the ‘Krazzy 4’ as well as the item number featuring King Khan and Hrithik in theatres across the country on April 11 this year, during the same time when Ajay Devgan-Kajol starrer ‘U, Me Aur Hum’ will be released.
So movie lovers will have two films to look out for come April!

Dawood aide, 5 others get life term for Kunjum murder

The Patiala House court on Monday sentenced Romesh Sharma — the alleged frontman of Dawood Ibrahim — and five others to life imprisonment in the Kunjum Budhiraja murder case.
The court has also slapped a fine of Rs 50,000 on Romesh Sharma, failing which Romesh will have to serve extra six months in jail.
On February 15, the court had convicted ex-Congress leader Romesh for murdering his girlfriend Kunjum, a fashion designer, nine years ago.
Romesh was accused of plotting the murder. Others held guilty for the murder of the 29-year-old fashion designer include Romesh's nephew Surinder Mishra, Tejinder Virdi alias Dolly and Hemchand.
Budhiraja had been stabbed to death on March 20, 1999, by a group of hired gangsters from Uttar Pradesh. According to the prosecution, the murder was carried out at the instance of Surinder Mishra, a co-accused and nephew of Romesh

Rakhi Sawant in Yash Raj’s next?

Item queen of Bollywood Rakhi Sawant is keen to get into the A-league of Bollywood. She recently performed an item number in Rakesh Roshan’s Krazzy 4 . And if sources are to be believed Rakhi has been signed by Yash Raj Films for their forthcoming film. According to a source, Rakhi has been signed for Yash Raj’s Shahid Kapoor – Rani Mukherjee starrer to be directed by Anurag Singh. “It’s going to be a life time role for Rakhi. It’s not a cameo. She will be seen as a dancer from the Bhand Samaj doing nautanki . Rakhi’s role is quite bold just like the way she is in her real life. She will have some really bold dialogues and rocking dance numbers in the film.” reveals a source. It is believed that Rakhi’s role in this film will help her raise the bar and be at par with the ‘A’ league actresses. The source adds that Chopras have asked Rakhi not to talk about the film as per their confidentiality policy. When we quizzed Rakhi about the film, she was surprised to know how we came to know about it. She neither confirmed nor denied the news but as expected, asked us, “Who told you about this? I don’t want to comment on this.” She further said, “It’s my dream to work with Yash Raj. I am dying to work with them and if I get an opportunity to work with them, it would be like a dream come true.” Yash Raj Films maintain complete secrecy about their projects but it is believed that the film will commence in March 2008.

India to have law to regulate test tube baby centres

India will soon have a law to regulate the mushrooming test tube baby centres run by private medical practitioners, health minister Anbumani Ramadoss said in New Delhi on Thursday.
Test tube baby centre, medically known as in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) centres, help infertile couples to conceive and have a baby.
The private IVF centres are growing like anything. They are unregulated and some of them are illegal as well. Soon, we will bring a law to regulate them," Ramadoss said.
He was speaking at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) after inaugurating the first government-run IVF centre there.
"The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has already submitted a set of guidelines and we are going to frame it and move it to the cabinet. It would be a comprehensive law," the minister added.
He said nearly eight per cent of couples in India suffer from infertility and need assisted reproductive techniques to conceive.
Major reasons for infertility in males are decreased sperm counts and abnormal sperms, and for females it is the blocked fallopian tubes, inability to ovulate and abnormalities in the genital tract are the reasons behind infertility.

1 billion people could die due to tobacco use: WHO

Tobacco use could kill more than one billion people around the world this century unless governments and civil society act to reverse the epidemic, according to a World Health Organisation (WHO) report that was released on Thursday.
"One hundred million deaths were caused by tobacco in the 20th century," said the report unveiled by WHO director-general Margaret Chan at a joint press conference with New York mayor Michael Bloomberg.
"If current trends continue, there will be up to one billion deaths in the 21st century. Eighty per cent of those deaths will occur in the developing world," the report said.
The study, recommends a six-pronged approach to combat the scourge.
The strategies involve monitoring tobacco use and prevention policies, protecting people from tobacco smoke, offering help to quit tobacco use, warning about the dangers of tobacco, enforcing bans on tobacco advertising and promotion and raising taxes on tobacco.
"While efforts to combat tobacco are gaining momentum, virtually all countries need to do more," Chan said. "These six strategies are within the reach of every country and, when combined as a package, they offer us the best chance of reversing this growing epidemic." Bloomberg, a former smoker, described the report as "revolutionary".
"For the first time, we have both a rigorous approach to stop the tobacco epidemic and solid data to hold us all accountable. While tobacco control measures are sometimes controversial, they save lives and governments need to step up and do the right thing," he said.
The report noted that tobacco use is growing fastest in low-income countries, owing to the steady population growth coupled with the targets by the tobacco industry. The end result is that millions of people become fatally addicted each year.
It said that nearly two thirds of the world’s smokers live in 10 countries: China (accounting for nearly 30 per cent), India (10 per cent), Indonesia, Russia, the United States, Japan, Brazil, Bangladesh, Germany and Turkey.
It noted that only five per cent of the world’s population is protected by comprehensive national smoke-free legislation, while half of the countries — two out of three in the developing world — did not even have minimal data on tobacco use.
"In most countries, tobacco use is higher among the poor than the rich and the poor suffer more from the consequences of tobacco-related diseases, creating economic hardship and perpetuating the cycle of poverty and illness," the study by the UN health agency said.
It made clear that tobacco use currently costs the world hundreds of billions of dollars each year.
The tobacco industry meanwhile spends tonnes of billions of dollars on marketing and targets the developing world with the same marketing and lobbying tactics perfected and now banned in rich countries, the report said.
These include enticing women and teens to use tobacco and pressurising governments to block marketing restrictions and tax hikes.
It singled out higher taxes on tobacco as "the most effective way to decrease consumption and encourage tobacco users to quit". A 70 per cent increase in the price of tobacco could prevent up to a quarter of all smoking-related deaths worldwide, it stat

Harbhajan target again

That bad blood between the Australian and Indian teams continues to exist was evident when Harbhajan Singh set out to bat in India’s poor performance at the Adelaide Oval here on Sunday. First, the crowd greeted him with the now-customary boos as he set his foot on the ground. Then, as he neared the wicket, the Australian captain, charged up after his bowlers had broken India’s back, said something the television cameras did not pick. It certainly did not seem welcome going by Ponting body language.
Ponting again gave Bhajji some advice when the batsman got out, prompting the Punjab player to stop in his tracks and shoot an aggressive glance at the Aussie. After the match, Harbhajan was seen exchanging ‘pleasantries’ with Ponting as the players shook hands at the pavilion.

Bowlers shine as Australia beat India

India's batsmen imploded as Australia recorded an unlikely 50-run win in their tri-series match on Sunday. After the Indian bowlers had done well to restrict Australia to 203 for nine on what looked a good batting wicket, the tourists were in control at 115 for four, but then collapsed against some disciplined bowling to be all out for 153 in the 42nd over. The result handed Australia another bonus point, all but guaranteeing them a place in the tri-series finals. India faltered early in the chase, losing three wickets for four runs to slump to 59 for four, but then captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and the previously out-of-form Yuvraj Singh steadied the innings. The pair put on 56 and appeared to be doing it easily, but the match again turned when Yuvraj miscued with a loose Brad Hogg long-hop and was caught in the deep by Stuart Clark for 26. It was a major setback for India and things got much worse when Dhoni, who was batting with a runner due to cramp, was run out for 37 just 19 runs later. A hesitant Rohit Sharma, running for Dhoni, was caught just out of his crease at the non-striker's end by a direct hit as India slumped to 134 for six. Left-armer Mitchell Johnson bowled impressively to claim 3-42, all-rounder James Hopes did some early damage to bowl Australia back into the match and finished with 2-16, while Adam Gilchrist completed five dismissals. Dhoni was livid with his team's batting and conceded his own dismissal was a crucial point in the match. He said the Indian batsmen let their bowlers down and was critical of their application, especially given they gambled on an extra bowler when opener Virender Sehwag was ruled out of the match due to an injury. "The bowlers did their job on a pitch that wasn't doing much," he said. "The batsmen should have taken more responsibility ... we tried a few flashy shots. "They have to take more responsibility, especially when you are playing with five bowlers and you are one batsman short." Australia captain Ricky Ponting was also unimpressed by his team's batting and was sure the World Cup champions could improve greatly on their recent form. "We are not batting very well, but we are doing enough to win some games," he said. "Once again tonight our bowlers held us up and we were pretty sharp in the field and came away with a bonus point win. "We haven't played our best cricket yet, but we are still on top of the table and are winning games of cricket, which is a good sign." India's batsmen were unable to capitalise on the good work with the ball of Ishant Sharma (2-32) and Irfan Pathan (4-41). The Australian top order again failed to fire, with Ponting's form woes continuing, and only a Michael Clarke half-century helped them set a competitive target after winning the toss and electing to bat. Clarke, who had been in doubt for the match due to bruised ribs suffered when struck by a Lasith Malinga delivery on Friday, made 79 from 108 balls in a man-of-the-match performance, but lacked support until Hogg chipped in with 32 in a 72-run seventh-wicket stand. Ponting came to the wicket with an obvious intent to get on top of the bowling with positive strokeplay, but the captain made just 10 before cutting the recalled Munaf Patel straight to Rohit Sharma at point. It took Ponting's tally for the series to just 53 runs at 10.60 and his latest failure came just a couple of days after Gilchrist admitted the skipper was struggling with the burdens of a long and often controversial summer. Andrew Symonds is another Australian batsman in the wars and he made just three before being caught by Robin Uthappa in gully from the bowling of Ishant Sharma, taking his tally for the series to just 38 runs at 9.50. Australia were in deep trouble at 73 for five, but Clarke's innings got them back into the match and India's batsmen then blew the chance to make it successive wins over the home side.

36 towns to get RIL gas

Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) and the state government have decided to go ahead with the first phase of the city gas network and identified 36 towns to be supplied by the East-West pipeline. The pipeline from the KG Basin to Bharoch will supply natural gas to Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Gujarat. Starting from Kakinada in East Godavari district, the pipeline will pass through West Godavari, Krishna, Khammam, Nalgonda, Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy and Medak. All the major towns in these districts will be connected to the main pipeline, a senior RIL official said. “We will soon finalise the city gas distribution project with a delivery capacity of 5 million standard cubic metres per day,” said Mr P.M.S. Prasad, president and CEO of RIL (oil and gas). Though formal clearance for the project has to come from the regulatory authorities concerned, it is likely to be approved as RIL is the only player with gas reserves and existing distribution network.Newly formed Reliance Gas Transportation Infrastructure Ltd is investing nearly $4 billion (Rs 16,000 crore) on the 1,400-km pipeline. RIL is learnt to have agreed to a request by the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, to supply cooking gas at a lower rate than decided by the Centre recently. “The price would be less than $4.3 per MMBtu (million British thermal units). It will certainly be the lowest rate Reliance is offering any state,” said a senior official in the energy department.RIL will take up two major city gas distribution projects in Tamil Nadu and Gujarat. The company also has its sights set on a network for Bangalore. Company officials told this correspondent that RIL has set a conservative target of 20 million consumers for its city gas network this year. Currently, Mumbai and Delhi have exclusive distributors for domestic gas via pipeline. Mumbai is supplied by Mahanagar Gas Ltd and Delhi by Indraprastha Gas.

FBI probe into Kandahar plane hijack case "inconclusive": CBI

The investigation by Federal Bureau of Investigation of the US into the hijacking of the Indian Airlines plane to Kandahar in Afghanistan in 1999 remains "inconclusive".
The FBI had registered a case at its headquarters in early 2000 as an American national Jeanne Moore, was on board the IC-814 plane. The sleuths had examined Moore who had spelt the word "coffin" for the hijackers when they made a list of demands to the Indian government. "We have shared everything possible. Everything means everything but the agency is yet to conclude its probe,"
CBI director Vijay Shanker told reporters here. He said the FBI team visited India six times. "Important aspects has been taken up with the us government at the highest level. We have given them the location of hijackers and those (terrorists released in return for safety of aircraft passengers) as well," he said.
Asked about the delay in completion of investigations by FBI, Shanker shot back "go and ask them. They have an office here. How can I comment on their behalf." The CBI has secured Interpol Red Corner notice against the hijackers -- Ibrahim Athar, Sunny Ahmed Qazi, Zahoor Ibrahim, Shahid Akhter Sayed and Shakir and accomplices Yusuf Azhar and Abdul Rauf, alleged to be key conspirators.
The plane, which had taken off from Kathmandu, was diverted to Amritsar and Lahore before landing at Dubai's al-Minhat airbase where 27 passengers were released and the body of 25-year-old Rupin Katyal, who had been stabbed, was thrown onto the tarmac. From there, the plane was taken to Kandahar. The plane was at Kandahar airport from December 26 to December 31.

Does money matter for Sania?

Sania Mirza has to deal with a fresh flap after the tennis star pulled out of the Bangalore Open on Monday claiming that she was doing so to avoid stirring up another controversy. She withdrew from the WTA tournament saying that a new controversy seemed to crop up every time she stepped on the court in India.

But a section of the media reported on Tuesday that Sania pulled out of the tournament because she was offered less appearance money than she asked for. Sania’s father, Imran Mirza, reacted strongly to this. "This is exactly why we decided not to field her.

"My daughter is tired of the controversies that the media creates," Imran told this newspaper. "We gave the reasons for her withdrawal. There is no hidden reason for not participating in the Bangalore Open. Appearance money was never a point of contention," he added.

Sania had said that her manager (Mahesh Bhupathi, also the head of Globosport, the agency that manages Sania’s career and handled the Bangalore Open till last year) advised her not to play in India this year. Bhupathi could not be reached for comment on this new angle to the story as he is busy playing for India in the Davis Cup tie against Uzbekistan.

Sundar Raju, the Karnataka State Lawn Tennis Association secretary and tournament director of the $600,000 Tier II Bangalore Open, said: "All I can say is that we, as an association, do not recognise any appearance cost. "If a corporate or a sponsor approaches us for a tie-up with a player, we try and mediate in order to facilitate sponsor activity at the tournament," he added.
Interestingly, Jaidip Mookerjea, the tournament director of Sunfeast Open, the other WTA tournament that is held in India, said the organisers of a WTA tournament do have a say in deciding the appearance money of a player.

"The organisers, the WTA and the player’s agent sit together and decide the appearance money," he told this newspaper. The former Davis Cup captain also expressed surprise at Sania’s decision. "I’m sure she has some very strong reason to pull out. I can’t accept controversies as a reason to pull out of a Tier II tournament held in one’s own country.

"She would have gained a lot of ranking points had she played in the tournament. Besides, she would have enjoyed tremendous crowd support," Mookerjea said.

India-Lanka match called off

For the second straight game in three days, rain cut short a resurgent India in their tracks. At the Gabba, Brisbane, after Gautam Gambhir and MS Dhoni's massive course-correcting act of a 184 runs took India to respectability, down came the rain before Sri Lanka could play even a ball to chase their 268-run target.
After several inspections, play was called off around 1530 pm IST (2000 local time). India now head the points table with four points from two games. On two points each are Sri Lanka and Australia.Gambhir, Dhoni shine After India had four wickets in a heap, Gambhir and Dhoni put India on track. The two covered the hard yards, ran the furious singles and frantic twos, and snitched the odd boundary. Gambhir (101 not out, 100 balls, 10 fours, 1 six) reached his third ODI ton.
He was dropped by Kumar Sangakkara on 11. But in less-than-ideal batting conditions, against Vaas, Muralitharan and Malinga, with the team in trouble, Gambhir counter-attacked to play his best innings yet in ODIs. His partner, captain Dhoni (88 not out, 95 balls, 5 fours, 1 six) began in desperate need of runs for the team, for himself. Beginning unsteadily, he gained momentum to reach his first fifty in ten international outings on this tour. After the flow, the ebbIndia, opting to bat first on a sticky wicket, got off to an assured start. Openers Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar put on 68 in swift time.
Sehwag looked in the mood, smashing Chaminda Vaas across the line over wide mid-on for six. But the two departed in quick succession. Tendulkar, having become the first batsman in ODI history to complete 16,000 runs, played on to Lasith Malinga. Sehwag threw the kitchen sink at a short ball down the leg, only to tickle it to Sangakkara, who didn t miss it.
Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene sensed an opportunity. He brought on Muttiah Muralitharan to attack the left-handers at the crease, Gambhir and Yuvraj Singh, making a comeback after a knee injury. The move paid off. Yuvraj edged one to first slip off Murali's third ball. Two balls later, the right-handed Rohit Sharma prodded at a doosra. Lanka appealed for a caught behind. Rudi Koertzen thought about it for a week and gave Sharma out. Replays suggested Koertzen had not got it right.
The resurrectionGambhir and Dhoni, both, struggled to read Muralitharan initially. But then Gambhir then cut loose, a drive through extra cover and a pull through midwicket off Murali taking him past fifty. He repeated those shots again, this time off Malinga, to move from 92 to 100. Dhoni too was at his enterprising best, cutting, pulling, whipping even reverse-sweeping to his highest score of the tour.

California battle too close to call

Polls closed today in California, the biggest prize in the presidential nominating primaries, with US media saying both Democratic and Republican races were too close to call.Republicans John McCain, Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee were battling for 170 delegates in California while Democrat Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama slugged it out for their party's 370 delegates as the polls closed at 8 pm local time (0931 IST) today in the biggest of the Super Tuesday primaries.
Meanwhile, Obama has registered wins in Alabama, Delaware, Georgia and Illinois, MinnesotaEarlier, McCain surged ahead of other contenders from his party winning three primaries in the exit polls, and Democrat contenders Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama had claimed three and one state respectively, as results poured in on 'Super Tuesday'.
Based on the exit polls, McCain was declared winner in the states of Connecticut, Illinois and New Jersey on the day when 24 states are holding primaries and caucuses. However, the critical state of Georgia was deemed too close to call with the Arizona Senator getting a tough fight from the former Governor of Arkansas Michael Huckabee. On the democratic side, Senator Obama won his home state of Illinois, Alabama, Delaware, Georgia and Minnesota.Clinton was projected winner in the state of Oklahoma where she spent some time campaigning. She has also won in New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts.
The New York Senator was declared winner in Tennessee as well, a key state where she had spent time and a lot of advertising dollars during the campaign trail.Clinton was also declared the winner in Arkansas, where a loss could have been extremely embarrassing for the former first lady, as her husband Bill Clinton had been the Governor of the state at one time in his political career. For Republicans, Arkansas was won by former Governor Huckabee in the first result of 'Super Tuesday'. A loss there could have been deeply embarrassing to him as well.
However, Republican candidate Mitt Romney had a disappointing day thus far as he was able to get only his home state of Massachussetts by the latest results. His campaign was said to be not only disappointed but frustrated. (With agency inputs)

An interview with Subhash Ghai

The showman of tinsel town Subhash Ghai explains that the subjects of all his films are related to the society. According to the filmmaker, his current film BLACK AND WHITE will also represent another social issue.
What is BLACK AND WHITE all about?
BLACK AND WHITE is the story of love and hatred. While black represents hatred, white is for love. I have tried to show the shades of love and hatred between Hindus and Muslims based on the concept of these two colors.
Is it true that the story of the film has a backdrop of terrorism? There are many films based on the same subject. So, why make another film on this oft-repeated subject?
Well, you can say that terrorism forms the backdrop. As far as the question of many films having been made on the same subject is concerned, I can give you some examples. Aamir Khan recently made TAARE ZAMEEN PAR which is based on children. If anyone makes another film on children then would you say there's nothing new in that! As there are many subjects related to children there are many fields related to our society too. I just have tried to touch those issues through my film.
Do you think that the audiences will appreciate your approach?
I won't call it my approach, it's my thought. Whatever I have done is based on my thoughts and the acceptance of the thought is absolutely on the audience.
Don't you think it's yet another film based on the Hindu-Muslim issue?
It's not based on the Hindu-Muslim issue, but it's a sensitive movie with social issues. What is Hindustan? I think Hindustan is a rainbow comprising of all the colours.
It's a very tough job to make films on a small scale. How tough was it for you?
Yeah, it's very tough to make films on a small scale. But I faced very little problem in making this film. It's only because the subject of the film was very simple. Most of the shooting was done at the Chandni Chawk area in Delhi. Thus, the budget of the film was very low.
What's the reason behind keeping the directorial baton away from you for almost four years now?
(Smiling) Everyone is asking me the same question. What if I was not directing movies, I was busy in many other meaningful jobs. I started my institute 'Whistling Woods International' in those four years. Students are learning the nitty-gritties of the film making at the institute. That job is equal to making ten films together. But, yeah, I have fulfilled my dreams now. And I am back to filmmaking. I promise you I will make one film a year.
Now-a-days there are lots of changes in filmmaking. What would you like to say about this?
If our lives are changeable then why not films? Since our birth if we have changed a lot then what's wrong with changes in filmmaking? It's the result of this transformation that I am working as a filmmaker and you as a reporter.
You go for very versatile subjects in your films. How do you deal with them?
It's very easy for me. My daughter is five years old now and in the same house I have my father who is now 80. I talk to both of them and that too in their own ways. Films are also something like that.
Your film KARZ is now being remade by another director. What would you like to say about this?
I wish that all my films are remade. I think remaking my films means honoring my films. Twenty years down the line I would like to see someone remaking my film BLACK AND WHITE. I am happy that Shahrukh's OM SHANTI OM is last year's best commercially hit movie and the name of the movie is based on a song from my film.
Your last film BOMBAY TO BANGKOK didn't do well. What do you think is the reason behind that?
Look, it has always been my habit that I never watch any movie after it is released. And it is a fact that I have never seen any of my movies after their release. A director's work never gets lessened with a movie being a hit or a flop. When Naagesh came to me with the story of IQBAAL I readily accepted it and even allowed him to direct the movie. In the same way he worked hard for BOMBAY TO BANGKOK too. May be the audience didn't like it. But I cannot tell you the reason for the film not doing well in the market, as I didn't watch it.
Please tell us about your next film MEIN YUVRAAJ.
MEIN YUVRAAJ is a romantic film in which Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif and Zayed Khan will work together. I am still shooting for that film and I hope to complete it by the end of April. I expect to release the film on the occasion of Diwali so that people may enjoy it at the best.

Why Do We Fall in Love?

Falling in love is a magical experience that happens between two people. So why do people fall in love? Professor Arthur Aron from State University of New York at Stonybrook has been exploring the dynamics of what happens when two people are falling in love:

Q: What motivates people to seek out love?
A: Our primary motivation as human beings is to expand the self and to increase our abilities and our effectiveness. One of the ways we accomplish this is through our relationships with other people. We have learned in our research that it is important to feel that you have the ability to be an effective person, especially in our relationships.

Q: How does this theory of self-expansion explain the process of falling in love?
A: Usually, we fall in love with a person that we find attractive and appropriate for us, but also someone who demonstrates that they are attracted to us. This creates a situation where a great opportunity is open to us for self-expansion. The fact that they are attracted to us offers a significant opportunity — when we perceive this, we feel a surge of exhilaration!

Q: Does it always work this way?
A: No, an interesting exception to this occurs if we feel badly about ourselves. The process gets thrown off if we can't believe that another persons finds us attractive — like the Groucho Marx joke where we don't want to belong to a club that would have us for a member. We tend to miss out on opportunities for falling in love if we don't feel good about ourselves.

Q: What conditions are best for meeting someone and falling in love?
A: When you meet someone under conditions that are highly arousing — a political demonstration, turbulence on a plane, a stimulating performance — a time when the body is stirred up and excited, we tend to experience attraction at a heightened level. This effect is well documented but the explanations for it are very controversial. I tend to believe that we come to associate the arousal of the situation with this person and our own self-expansion.

Q: When do we fall in love?
A: Contrary to what most people think, the statistics show that most people fall in love with someone that they have known for a while. People only report falling in love quickly about 1/3 to 40 percent of the time. Of course, this varies from culture to culture. Falling in love happens differently between cultures but it does occur in most cultures.

Q: How does our appearance factor into the equation of falling in love?
A: This is interesting; we have found that if you are very unattractive, it can hurt you a lot in forming romantic relationships. However, being attractive doesn't help that much.

Q: How do you explain that?
A: We have found that two important characteristics, kindness and intelligence, are extremely important in the process of falling in love. And attractiveness is not connected to these things. These two attributes are things that people learn about someone from knowing them over time. Intelligence is important in all aspects of life, especially in love. But kindness is the strongest indicator for a successful long-term relationship

I want a girl this time: Hrithik Roshan

Mumbai, Jan 24 (IANS) Hrithik Roshan and his wife Sussanne are expecting their second child in May and the actor says he would like to have a daughter this time.

'I don't want to say much about this. But, yes, we're very excited. I thought my excitement level would be lower the second time around, but it's as high,' Hrithik told IANS.

Would Hrithik like his second child to be a baby brother for Hrehaan? 'No,' he says firmly. 'I want a girl this time.'

Hrithik, who will be seen in the periodical 'Jodhaa-Akbar', set to hit the marquee Feb 15. He has gone straight to the pop art of advertising biscuits.

Last week, he was in Goa shooting for an ad with the gifted Navdeep Singh, who last year directed the talked-about noir film 'Manorama Six Feet Under'.

It's one more ad for a biscuit company. The last time Hrithik shot an ad for the same guys, it showed him waltzing ethereally with Isha Sharvani. This time, Hrithik's partner in the ad format is upcoming model Gunjan Bakshi, who has so far mainly done ads for the print medium.

But sad luck, Gunjan! This time Hrithik doesn't dance in the ad. And that's quite a change for the actor.

'I'm aware a majority of the ads expect me to put on my dancing shoes. I can't say I've consciously avoided dancing for this one. But yes, when you sit down to create something with likeminded people, ideas do tend to be tossed freely and feelingly. I did feel the dancing bit in the ads was becoming tedious.'

Hrithik doesn't do much dancing in his next release 'Jodhaa-Akbar'. And that isn't because he injured his knee during the shooting.

'That's completely untrue. I didn't get injured during 'Jodhaa Akbar'. My knee had been suffering for a long time. I just let it be until it came to a point where it could take no more.'

The plus side of the injury is that Hrithik got to spend more time with his wife and son Hrehaan.

The downside? 'Well, here I am in Goa surrounded by the sun and sand. I'm staring at this inviting expanse of beach leading into a stretch of the bluest sea I've ever seen.

'And all I want to do is run with the sand and sea flapping on my feet and face. But I can't do that. Thanks to my knee. I've to behave myself if I want to again do what I love doing the most, namely action and dance.'

"Saying no to Shankar & Rajini can be a problem"

Aishwarya Rai opened up to the media first time on her upcoming Tamil project – 'Robot' to be directed by the renowned craftsman Shankar. She would star against Superstar Rajinikanth.

Readers might remember that most of the heroine roles in Rajini's last few projects starting from Nilambari in 'Padayappa' were offered to Aishwarya Rai, only to be turned down owing to the date issues of the actress.

Talking on Shankar and Rajinikanth, Aishwarya Rai expressed, "They are super entertainers, independently and together; it can be a problem saying no to them. I did get an enquiry last year when I was away on Pink Panther. This time I am happy that we could work out our schedule." On heroines getting sidelined in a Rajini movie, Aishwarya was quick to refute the claim, "I don't think it's a fair statement. You can't but be fascinated by this phenomenon called Rajini sir. He is so super fascinating and intriguing to his audience. I don't think it's a deliberate attempt by any director to sideline any actor / character working along with him."

She went on to add, "Rajini Sir is such a wonderful human being. He has been so close to the family too. I am glad and honored to be working with him" With Shankar finally managing to rope in Aishwarya Rai into his dream project, the expectations on 'Robot' would now touch sky high. The project to be produced by Ayngaran and Eros International has A.R.Rahman for music and will be the second film for Aishwarya Rai under Shankar's direction after 'Jeans'.

Shahid ready to work with Kareena!

Teenage heartthrob Shahid Kapur is on a roll with two big solo hits under his belt, and that during two consecutive years. Rajshri Production's VIVAH turned out to be one of the biggest hits of 2006 and Shahid's first solo blockbuster. Not content with that, Shahid followed it up with the 32 crore crore, JAB WE MET, which like VIVAH, is one of the biggest hits of last year.

However, despite the two huge hits, Shahid feels that he is not getting his due, as the media seems to be more interested in his personal rather than professional life. He says that though the media is doing its job, a certain section, which believes in sensationalism, has unfairly targeted him. The allegation that his romantic alliance with Kareena persisted till the pair became a hit angers him. He retorts by clarifying that the allegation is unfounded because their previous two films, FIDA (2004) and 36 CHINA TOWN (2006), met with lukewarm response and JAB WE MET became a super hit does not imply that their break up was a publicity gimmick.

A thorough professional, Shahid is ready to complete the patchwork parts of Boney Kapoor's MILENGE MILENGE with Kareena, but no time frame has been allocated for that. However, their fans need not feel bad as there is good news on another front. Shahid is ready to bury the hatchet and work with Kareena in future, if a good offer comes along. But as of now he is busy concentrating on his next two ventures with Vidya Balan, KISMET CONNECTIONS and LUCKY CHARM, which he hopes would turn out to be the biggest hits of the decade!

Well, even we hope that Shahid's LUCKY CHARM works in a big way for the charming, boy next door.

Gambhir, Dhoni lift India to big total v Sri Lanka

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Gautam Gambhir and Mahendra Singh Dhoni shared a 184-run partnership to save India from a top-order batting collapse and make 267 for four in their tri-series clash with Sri Lanka on Tuesday.

Gambir made the most of an early let off to smash an unbeaten 102 while Dhoni finished on 88 not out after the pair guided India to an impressive total at the Gabba in Brisbane.

India, whose opening match against Australia was washed out on Sunday, looked to be in early trouble when they lost four wickets for 15 runs to slump to 83-4 in the 21st over.

Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag had given the Indians a flying start when they piled on 68 runs in the first 14 overs before Sri Lanka hit back.

Lasith Malinga bowled Tendulkar for 35 before Sehwag fell for 33, caught behind by Kumar Sangakkara off Ishara Amerasinghe.

Muttiah Muralitharan then captured two wickets in his first over, Yuvraj Singh for two and Rohit Sharma for a duck, leaving India in disarray.

Gambhir and Dhoni made a slow start as they steadily rebuilt the innings before a late flurry saw them pile on 105 runs from the last 10 overs.

Gambhir, who survived a dropped catch from Sangakkara when he was on 11, hit 10 boundaries and a six and reached his third one-day international hundred in the last over, off 99 balls.

Dhoni, who completed his 18th one-day half-century, struck five fours and one six in his 95-ball innings.

ISI hires Dawood to kill Advani, Modi

Security around senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader L K Advani and Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi was reviewed on Tuesday following intelligence inputs that global terrorist Dawood Ibrahim has been asked by Pakistan's Inter Services Intelligence to assassinate them.

The inputs to central agencies have come from various sources indicating that Dawood had been approached by ISI to carry out the plot, sources said.

Immediately after receiving the inputs, the review of security of Advani, who is a 'Z-plus' protectee was done, and was found the arrangements satisfactory.

The Centre also sent an advisory to Gujarat government for taking necessary steps to beef up the security of Modi who also enjoys Z-plus category security.

The intelligence inputs suggested that Dawood, who has been designated by the US as a global terrorist having links with the Al-Qaeda, had been roped in after several sleeper cells of various terror groups failed to execute the plan.

Retracing Gandhi's last steps, 60 years later

New Delhi, Jan 29 (IANS) This is where he walked his last steps before collapsing with a peaceful 'Hey Ram' on his lips, forgiving even in death his assassin. Sixty years after that day 'when the light went out of our lives', Mahatma Gandhi's spirit forces introspection at the sprawling white bungalow in central Delhi now named Gandhi Smriti.

The lane where the house stands is now called Tees January Marg after that Jan 30, 1948 when the world's greatest apostle of peace was felled by a bullet fired by Nathuram Godse. The house is 5, Tees January Marg. A mere address that is so much more for the nation.

And as India observes Wednesday as Martyrdom Day, children at Gandhi Smriti, or Gandhi Memories, look inwards to see what Mahatma Gandhi really meant to them. Even amidst the buzz of getting ready for the function that will be attended by President Pratibha Patil and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

'Do I follow Gandhi's thoughts? Yes and no! I don't use abusive words against anybody,' says Sheetal Panwar, a Class 8 student. 'But, I do lie,' admits her classmate Sajal Jain, shamefacedly, 'and I do fight, but not with punches.'

Hauling their bags, the two students of St Paul's in south Delhi school are looking at the small canopy marking the exact area where Gandhi fell at 5.17 p.m. on Jan 30, 1948.

The two are among the many schoolchildren in the complex, where marigold garlands hang from fences, strings of little bulbs line paths and awnings of white cloth billow in the chilly breeze.

As they walk in the weak sunlight, children in a dozen different school uniforms sit in clusters, sharing their food or talking animatedly. Meanwhile, workers run from one end to another, looking busy, sometimes armed with a can of paint or hauling a cart, laden with wooden boards or potted plants.

About 1,500 school students are rehearsing Gandhi's favourite hymns for the prayer meeting to mark the 60th anniversary of the assassination.

For others, this is where Gandhi moves out of textbooks to become a real figure, who lived - and made a difference.

Inside the two-storey whitewashed building, 54-year-old Hannah Thomsen, a Danish tourist, moves from one wall panel to another, reading quotes from Gandhi.

'I first thought, is this a school?' laughs Thomsen. She and her husband have come to take a look at the place because 'like Hans Christian Andersen is identified with Denmark, for us, India means Gandhi'.

On the covered walkway beside the extensive lawns, Tia Shuyler and her family read the story of the 1942 Quit India movement.

Her father, William Shuyler, points to his daughter as the 'prime motivator' for getting them to Gandhi Smriti on the last day of their India sojourn.

'I had studied about Gandhi in my school, but it was really in context of his spirituality, where he is grouped along with Martin Luther King Junior and Mother Teresa,' says Tia, 23, a student of political science from the US. 'I was more interested in learning about his political views.'

During her first visit to this country, Tia has often been asking herself what the Mahatma would think of modern India. 'In fact, when I saw the traffic here, I asked my mother, what would Gandhi think about it.'

She feels it is time for another Gandhi. 'I am very glad that he was in India, but we need somebody like him right now in America.'

As news came in that terrible day, India's first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru said over All India Radio: 'Friends and comrades, the light has gone out of our lives and there is darkness everywhere...'

He then went on to say in an unforgettable, moving speech: 'The light has gone out, I said, and yet I was wrong. For the light that shone in this country was no ordinary light. The light that has illumined this country for these many years will illumine this country for many more years later, that light will still be seen in this country and the world will see it and it will give solace to innumerable hearts.'

The warmth of that light still shines, as is evident from just a walk through Gandhi Smriti.

Israel on High Alert After First Suicide Bombing in a Year

Israeli security forces are on high alert following the first Palestinian suicide bombing in Israel in a year.

Israeli officials are considering a number of options in response to the bombing. The head of the Israeli parliament's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee (Tzachi Hanegbi) is urging the government to order the killings of the political leaders of the Palestinian miltiant group Hamas.

Hamas's armed wing claimed responsibility for Monday's suicide bombing in the southern city of Dimona that killed one woman and injured at least seven other people.

Police prevented a second blast by killing another bomber before he could act. Police say the two suicide bombers crossed into Israel from Egypt.

In violence today, Palestinian hospital officials say Israeli troops killed two Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip.

The Israeli military said two suspicious men approached an Israeli force near the town of Rafah early Tuesday before troops opened fire. Israeli troops frequently conduct raids in the area to hunt militants.

The United States strongly condemned Monday's suicide attack. In a statement late Monday, the White House called upon the Palestinian Authority to intensify its fight against terrorism.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas also condemned the bombing but criticized an Israeli military raid earlier in the day against militants in the West Bank.

U.S. border funds highlight Bush security budget

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Bush administration proposed new spending of more than $2 billion to tighten U.S. borders with fencing along the frontier with Mexico and add patrol agents and more beds for detained illegal immigrants.

"A major priority of our president, and this department, and the American people is getting control of our borders," U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said in briefing reporters on his department's budget request to Congress for fiscal 2009. The budget year began on October 1.

U.S. President George W. Bush proposed raising the department's budget by 6.8 percent to $50.5 billion. The 5-year-old department was created after the September 11 attacks to oversee domestic security and disaster response, and has struggled to integrate the 22 agencies put under its umbrella.

Democrats accused the administration of trying to slash $2 billion in spending for state and local programs and aid to firefighters, even as it raised spending for other areas. "It's impossible to secure our nation without securing our communities first," said U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson of Mississippi, chairman of the House of Representatives Homeland Security Committee.

Nearly one-fourth of the total budget request, or $12.14 billion, is spending for border security, up 19 percent from 2008. Illegal immigration has become a major issue in this year's presidential campaign, especially among Bush's fellow Republicans.

Major border initiatives include $442 million to hire 2,200 new border patrol agents, bringing the total to 20,000 by September 2009. Bush is also seeking $46 million to provide 1,000 more beds for illegal immigrants who are detained, bringing the total to 33,000.

The budget seeks $775 million to build more fencing along the southern border and install high-tech surveillance equipment and other infrastructure.

Chertoff said 287 miles of fencing had been built so far, with a goal of 670 miles by this year. That would run most of the length of the border from the Pacific Ocean to the New Mexico-Texas border, except for natural barriers, he said.
