Princes welcome inquest verdicts

Princess Diana's sons have tried to draw a line under years of speculation surrounding her death with a statement welcoming her inquest verdict.
In a message to jurors, Princes William and Harry said: "We agree with their verdicts and are both hugely grateful."
The inquest found Princess Diana and Dodi Al Fayed were unlawfully killed due to the "gross negligence" of driver Henri Paul and the paparazzi.
But Mr Al Fayed's father Mohamed has refused to accept the verdicts.
'Profound gratitude'
The princes thanked the jury "for the forbearance they have shown in accepting such significant disruption to their lives over the past six months".
They also commended coroner Lord Justice Scott Baker for "his unfailing courtesy and for all the consideration shown by him and his staff not only to us but to all those involved in this hearing".
They added: "We are particularly grateful to Trevor Rees and to others who came forward to give evidence - in many cases reawakening their painful and personal memories.
"Finally, the two of us would like to express our most profound gratitude to all those who fought so desperately to save our mother's life on that tragic night."
Blow to 'millions'
The jury of six women and five men returned joint verdicts of unlawful killing through grossly negligent driving - or gross negligence manslaughter, by majorities of nine to two.
The inquest into the 1997 Paris crash that killed the couple and Mr Paul lasted six months.
The total cost to British taxpayers of investigating Princess Diana's death is expected to exceed £10m.
But Mohamed Al Fayed has rejected the verdicts and his spokesman warned that he may still mount a legal challenge by means of a High Court judicial review.
In a statement issued immediately after the jury's decision, Mr Al Fayed said the verdicts would come as a blow to "millions" of his supporters around the world.
'Waste of money'
He also insisted the hearing, held largely at his behest, had not been a waste of time or money.
This was not the opinion held by many of those who answered a BBC Newsnight poll on the subject.
The survey of 1,000 people found 78% thought the estimated £10m bill had not been well spent and 62% thought the princess's death was a tragic accident.
Despite the verdicts, the Ministry of Justice has confirmed it is not possible for the Crown Prosecution Service to prosecute foreign nationals for deaths abroad, even if the victim is British.
All of the paparazzi involved were foreign.
Meanwhile, Princess Diana's former Butler, Paul Burrell, is waiting to discover whether he will be investigated by the police for perjury for allegedly lying at the inquest.
Scotland Yard has so far refused to confirm whether there will be an inquiry, but the Crown Prosecution Service said if the police gave them a file on the matter, they would investigate it.

Scientists develop technique to "clean" stem cells

Scientists in Singapore have developed a strategy to "clean up" embryonic stem cells, which researchers hope can one day be used to replace damaged tissues and for other tailor-made personal treatments.Embryonic stem cells are master cells that can grow, or "differentiate", into any type of cell or tissue, and are subsequently transplanted into the body. But some studies have shown that residual stem cells that fail to differentiate can turn cancerous later on.In the journal Stem Cells, scientists in Singapore said they generated antibodies that successfully killed off these residual stem cells in mice."Although human embryonic stems cells are a very powerful source to make differentiated cells, like heart cells, the problem is that you can have residual cells and there is a safety concern because they can form ... a mass of tumour cells," said Andre Choo, senior scientist at the Bioprocessing Technology Institute in Singapore."So if you give a product that is 95 percent heart cells, but 5 percent embryonic stem cells, it may be a problem later on," he said by telephone. The researchers managed to generate antibodies in mice after injecting human embryonic stem cells into the animals. The antibodies were then harvested and added to cultured embryonic stem cells that had been newly differentiated on laboratory dishes."It (the antibody) specifically eliminated undifferentiated cells within 30 minutes but left differentiated cells untouched," the researchers wrote. The mixture was later injected into a batch of mice, while another batch of mice were given untreated stem cells. After 6 to 8 weeks, the researchers detected tumours in the mice that received untreated stem cells, but those that received the mixture of stem cells and antibodies were free of tumours even after 20 weeks."We made antibodies that can kill them (undifferentiated stem cells) ... it acts as a clean up step for you to remove any of these rogue cells or potentially problematic cells," Choo said. A new direction for future of US tennis

U.S. tennis was a formidable force at the Sony Ericsson Open, by today’s standards at least.
Serena Williams won the women’s title for the fifth time. Andy Roddick ended a streak of 11 consecutive losses to Roger Federer. James Blake matched his best Key Biscayne showing by reaching the quarterfinals. Lindsay Davenport scored her biggest victory since becoming a mother when she beat No. 2-ranked Ana Ivanovic.
None of those results alleviated concerns about the future of American tennis, because Williams is 26, Roddick is 25, Blake is 28 and Davenport is 31. The grooming of talent in the United States has stalled, while waves of precocious youngsters keep surfacing in Europe, Asia and South America.
“We’re seeing the emergence of players from all over the globe, countries that include Serbia, Croatia, Cyprus, China, India,” said Arlen Kantarian, the U.S. Tennis Association’s CEO for professional tennis. “We’re feeling the impact. It’s a new world. We recognize the reality, and we’re committed to change.”

The best news last week for American tennis might have come off the court. The USTA hired Davis Cup captain Patrick McEnroe to supervise player development as part of a greater commitment to grooming future champions.
In the past, the USTA defined its role as to help academies and parents develop players. Now the association wants to take the lead.
“I’ve been arguing this for 10 years—if you’re going to do it, why not do it all the way?” McEnroe said. “The USTA takes a lot of heat over the years for `Where are the players?’ So you might as well step up and be accountable.”
The USTA is creating an advisory board and coaches commission to help scout and develop talent. McEnroe will coordinate the developmental program, serve as a super scout and reach out to academies and tennis parents. He’ll also oversee a training center for elite juniors in Boca Raton, Fla.
In short, the USTA and McEnroe are taking responsibility for getting Americans into the second week of Grand Slam tournaments.
“We had to get in the game,” USTA president Jane Brown Grimes said. “The other Grand Slam countries are taking big steps in this direction.”
Critics of the USTA may greet with skepticism the latest moves, which include a 50-percent increase in spending on player development next year. The association wins praise for its marketing and promotional campaigns, but past pledges to improve the grooming of players have gone unfulfilled, resulting in a long, slow decline in U.S. results.
In 2007, for only the second time in 20 years, no American made the singles finals at the U.S. Open. U.S. men went 0-9 at the French Open, their worst showing there in at least 40 years.
On the women’s side, only one American younger than 26—Ashley Harkleroad— is ranked in the top 100. Roddick is the youngest of the three Americans in men’s top 50.
By contrast, other countries with ambitious developmental programs have enjoyed a tennis boom

Study ties bedroom TV to unhealthy habits in teens

Teenagers with a bedroom television tend to have poorer diet and exercise habits and lower grades in school than those without one, U.S. researchers said on Monday.

While many studies have examined TV viewing habits of young people, researchers at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health said little had been known about the consequences in particular for older adolescents of having a bedroom TV.
They questioned 781 adolescents, ages 15 to 18, in the Minneapolis area in 2003 and 2004. Of them, 62 percent reported having a television in their bedroom.
Not surprisingly, those with a bedroom TV were more apt to watch it a lot, clocking four to five more hours in front of a television per week, the researchers said. Twice as many of the teens with a bedroom TV were classified as heavy TV watchers -- at least five hours a day -- compared to those without one.
Girls with a bedroom television reported getting less vigorous exercise -- 1.8 hours per week compared to 2.5 hours for girls without a TV. They also ate fewer vegetables, drank more sweetened beverages and ate meals with their family less often, the researchers said.
Boys with a bedroom TV reported having a lower grade point average than boys without one, as well as eating less fruit and having fewer family meals, the researchers said.
"It really clearly points out that there's some merit to not allowing your child to have a TV in the bedroom," said Daheia Barr-Anderson, one of the researchers.
"When you upgrade your TV in the living room and you have this smaller TV that's out of date but still usable, parents should really resist putting it in one of your children's bedrooms -- and resist the pressure from the child to have a TV in their bedroom," she said in a telephone interview.
