Wilshere double wins Arsenal Emirates Cup

Arsenal were worthy winners of the Emirates Cup, beating Rangers convincingly at the Emirates Stadium.


Arsenal went into the game knowing a draw was enough to win the tournament, while Rangers needed to defeat the Gunners to secure the trophy.


Arsene Wenger's side weren't tempted to take a defensive approach and dominated the game from the offset, with Arsenal leading by two goals after ten minutes. They naturally eased up after this point but still monopolised possession, creating chances effortlessly in both halves.


Rangers showed more fight in the second half, creating a few good opportunities, but the Gunners were too strong and extended their lead further to roll out 3-0 winners.


Jack Wilshere opened the scoring after 90seconds as Arsenal tore through the packed Rangers defence. Andrey Arshavin played the ball across the field, Wilshere left it for Cesc Fabregas who picked the ball in the right of the penalty area.

Rossi ends US dream of first Italy victory

The United States looked on course for a first ever victory over Italy on Monday when a young striker from Teaneck, New Jersey stole it from them.Giuseppe Rossi, born near New York to Italian immigrants and now wearing the colors of Italy, scored a 59th minute equalizer with a thumping shot from 26 meters (yards) less than two minutes after coming on as a substitute. He made his first appearance for Italy last October.After Daniele De Rossi added a second with another long range strike, Rossi, sold to Spain's Villareal by Manchester United two years ago, collected a pass from Andrea Pirlo with a powerful first time strike to complete Italy's 3-1 victory at the Confederations Cup.Landon Donovan had given the Americans a deserved 41st minute lead from the penalty spot with his 40th international goal even though Bob Bradley's team was down to 10 men after a harsh red card given to Ricardo Clark a few minutes earlier for a foul on Gennaro Gattuso.With the Italians looking uninspired even against 10 men, coach Marcello Lippi sent on Rossi and the game turned.The 22-year-old striker's arrival gave the Italians a far more potent threat in attack alongside Alberto Gilardino and Vincenzo Iaquinta and the American defense, which had given barely a chance, came under strong presser in the last 30 minutes.They succumbed to the two long range shots and an inspired move and now the US has lost four times to Italy alongside three ties.Bradley's team didn't look like a side down to 10 men as they continued to hold the Italians in midfield. But the emergence of Rossi changed everything.The striker with joint Italian-US citizenship took the ball from Benny Feilhaber on halfway and ran 15 meters before firing a powerful left footer that flew past his former Manchester United teammate Tim Howard inside the post.De Rossi's second matched Rossi's goal, a 30-meter drive which flew past two defenders and inside Howard's far post.And in the fourth minute of injury time, Pirlo danced round a defender on the left and floated a ball back to Rossi who drove it powerfully past Howard for the third.

Ronaldo will be salary king: Report

Cristiano Ronaldo will earn 13 million euros a year with Real Madrid to become the world's highest-paid footballer once the finishing touches are put to his 93 million-euro move from Manchester United, Marca sports daily reported on Wednesday.Marca said Ronaldo's deal would see him move ahead of current soccer salary king, Inter Milan striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who currently earns 12 million euros a year.Ronaldo, 24, had been on around 7.5 million euros a year at Old Trafford.At Real, his net salary is reportedly set to top nine million, in contrast to the six million gross for veteran striker Raul.According to a report by financial advisors Ernst and Young, footballers plying their trade in Spain enjoy a special tax regime meaning they must pay only 24 per cent income tax rather than the usual 43 per cent top rate for high rollers.Real chairman Florentino Perez meanwhile told the Publico daily that the money spent on Ronaldo and Brazilian Kaka, signed from AC Milan for 65 million euros, was worth it in terms of "investment" as he expected their signings to push club earnings to some 400 million euros a year.Portuguese bank Espirito Santo has capitalised on the Ronaldo saga by launching a full-page advertisement in Spain showing the player smiling atop a pile of suitcases with the caption: "Here's where my money is."

Bhutia decides to leave Mohun Bagan

Bhaichung Bhutia on Monday decided to part ways with Mohun Bagan in retaliation to the club's decision to serve him a show cause letter recently for missing the club's practice and an exhibition match in Jalpaiguri."I don't want to play for Mohun Bagan anymore," said the India skipper.Bhutia, who reached here last night after taking part in a reality show, said the show cause letter was a publicity gimmick."It (the show cause) was a publicity gimmick. It could have been handled better. Anjan Mitra just needed to call me up," said Bhutia, who led Mohun Bagan this season.The star striker said he has been asked to reconsider but it's unlikely he would do so."It's good for both of us to part ways. They are telling me to rethink but at the moment I have only one stand. I don't have any motivation left in me to play for Mohun Bagan," said Bhutia.

The Portuguese winger scored two more goals on Tuesday night to seal a 2-0 victory over Bolton and put United three points clear of Arsenal atop the Premier League.
After breaking the deadlock 10 minutes earlier, Ronaldo scored from a dipping free kick - his 33rd goal in all competitions to eclipse George Best's season-leading tally for a United winger in 1967/8.
"He's phenomenal," Ferguson said. "It speaks everything for the player. I don't think there is a winger in this world that can do that and that's the measure of the quality of the lad and his scoring ability."

Scottish Premier League

Celtic and Rangers have once again emerged as the top two teams in the Scottish League, but Hibernian and Dundee United – both with 26 points from 14 matches going into December – are within striking distance. Celtic lead with 31 points from 13 matches, while Rangers have 28 from the same number of matches. The two must watch action this month is Celtic taking on Hibernian on December 22 and then Celtic up against Dundee United four days later.

French League

Lyon and Nancy are slowly making it a two-team battle for the league title in France. Lyon have 34 points from 15 matches, but Nancy can catch up with them with one win and they have played one match less. However, Lyon’s recent loss to the bottom half-placed Marseille proves that the two teams are not unbeatable.
