Popular abortion provider shot dead in US church
Dr. George Tiller, one of America's popular providers of late-term abortions despite decades of protests and attacks, has been shot and killed in a Kansas church where he was serving as an usher. Long a focus of national anti-abortion groups, Tiller was shot in the foyer of Reformation Lutheran Church, which held a special service on Sunday evening. The gunman fled, but Wichita Deputy Police Chief Tom Stolz said a suspect was detained in Kansas City three hours after the shooting on Sunday. Johnson County sheriff's spokesman Tom Erickson identified the detained man as Scott Roeder. Court records and internet postings show that someone using the name Scott Roeder has a criminal past and has expressed anti-abortion opinions on sympathetic websites.
