Google launches new DoubleClick Ad Exchange

Internet search engine site Google today said it is launching a new version of an online Ad exchange, enabling advertisers and publishers to buy and sell advertising space. We are excited to announce the new DoubleClick Ad Exchange, a step towards creating a more open display advertising ecosystem for everyone," Google said in a statement.
In 2007, the search engine site has signed a definitive agreement to acquire DoubleClick Inc for USD 3.1 billion in cash from San Francisco-based private equity firm Hellman & Friedman along with JMI Equity and management.
The Ad Exchange is a real-time marketplace that would help large online publishers as well as ad networks and agency networks.
"The DoubleClick Ad Exchange will help create a more open marketplace and is a major step towards that vision, we believe that growing the display advertising pie for everyone will greatly enhance the web experience for advertisers, publishers, and ultimately users," Google vice-president Product Management Neal Mohan said.
Ad Exchange would comprise Google's own advertising auction systems AdWords and AdSense programmes, expanding the number of buyer and seller that could use the online exchange.

The Secret of Infosys' success

The three aspects of ensuring success for any entrepreneur was innovation, ability to use innovation to create service and products that Infosys corporate education centre add value to customers and the ability to communicate the value to customers, Infosys Chairman N R Narayana Murthy said.
"Think of innovation and marketing as two most important instruments for creating a wonderful organisation and tremendous brand equity," Murthy advised entrepreneurs at the launch of a new marketing book, "No Marketing Money" authored by Jessie Paul, a former global brand manager at Infosys. Using Innovative platform that does not cost too much money could help entrepreneurs to create brand equity, he said sharing his own experience of building Infosys from a little known brand to a globally recognised brand.
He said during a survey conducted in 1992 with prospective employees on the company they would like to join, zero per cent opted for Infosys. This dismal picture drove him to take a vow to change it. "We will be number one in India in five years," he had told his colleagues then.
His confidence was met with some scepticism by colleagues who wondered how a small company with less resources could hope to compete with richer and bigger companies, he recalled.
"We will do new unusual things," he had told his colleagues. "We will do what other companies did not do," he said reminiscing over the transformation of a company to a leading global software firm.
"Think of new ideas and think of platforms that do not cost too much and that will get people to talk about you, magazines to write about you," he said, adding communicating unusual ideas would attract people.
Paul said the book was a guide for companies especially startups to establish themselves and grow rapidly on a relatively limited budget. It provides actionable insights and advice on how to steer as well as manage brands.
Girish Paranjpe, Joint CEO, IT Business and Member of the Board, Wipro, said "Clear Positioning and Innovative marketing are required if more Indian firms are to play a role on the global stage."

26 years old world's tallest man of 8ft 1-inch in turkey

Making his first ever trip outside his native Turkey to tour London this week, Sultan Kosen is guaranteed a unique view of the English capital -- at more than eight feet tall he will tower above the crowds.
Crowned the world's tallest man on Thursday, 26-year-old Kosen stands at 8 feet 1 inch (2.46 metres), making him the first person in more than a decade to officially measure over 8 feet, and one of only 10 confirmed cases in history, according to Guinness World Records.
He takes the title from China's Bao Xi Shun who, at 7 feet 8.95 inches, regained the title last year after 8 feet 5.5 inch Ukrainian Leonid Stadnyk's claim was discredited when he refused to be independently measured.
Kosen lists being able to see a long way into the distance as one of the main advantages of his height, as well as helping his mum with domestic jobs such as changing light bulbs and hanging curtains.
But he admits finding shoes to fit his 36.5 cm (14.4 inch) feet -- the world's largest -- or big enough clothes, are a disadvantage.
While being able to find a car that accommodates his size is one of Kosen's hopes after receiving the official title, his ultimate quest is romance.
"My biggest dream is to get married and have children," he told reporters. "I'm looking for love."
Kosen's trip was organised to mark the launch of the Guinness World Records 2010 edition, which also features the world's most pierced man -- 78-year-old former British bank manager John Lynch, who has 241 piercings -- and the world's youngest billionaire, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerman, who made his first billion dollars aged 23 years 296 days.

The Man Who's Beating Google search Engine

On a smoggy August morning outside Beijing's China World Hotel, Li Yanhong's fan club is assembling. "We'll use his English name, okay?" a wrangler shouts over the chattering young crowd. A black Mercedes-Benz approaches, its door opens and the masses do as they're told. A boyishly handsome 41-year-old executive steps out. "Ro-bin! Ro-bin!" scream his followers, hoisting led-encrusted placards for a few obliging paparazzi.
In his keynote at the Baidu World conference a few hours later, Robin Li describes to a crowd of thousands how the search service he created ten years ago is becoming China's gateway to the world of information. Then he parades across a stage, surrounded by smiling children as "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" plays in Mandarin and soap bubbles fill the room.Li has earned his share of Olympic-style marketing. In a decade he has transformed Baidu from a handful of employees putting in sweat equity to an enterprise with 7,000 workers and a market value of $12.8 billion. Li's personal worth has swelled, too: Last year he was the seventh-richest person in China; today his Baidu stake is worth an estimated $2.1 billion. In 2008 the company netted $150 million on $460 million in revenue. In the process Li has become a national symbol of China's burgeoning identity as a global Internet player, with a digital population of 338 million online users. Baidu has captured a huge slice, each month racking up 8 billion searches and 145 million unique visitors, according to ComScore, making it the most popular non-U.S. site in the world.
"A lot of Chinese people have wondered if knowledge really means power in today's market economy," Li says during an interview with forbes in Baidu's no-frills Beijing conference room. (By year-end the company will move to a new headquarters designed to resemble an enormous, long rectangular search box.) "I think I've proven that it does."
Google has been steadily winning eyeballs there (see graph, right) and plans a near-doubling of its sales force, now in the hundreds, over the next 12 months in what is shaping up as an epic battle to dominate the world's search business. "China's going to be the largest Internet market in the world," says Gary Rieschel, a cofounder of Qiming Ventures in Shanghai. "If Google isn't the leader there, will it really be the leading search company in the world?"
On another front, China's e-commerce giant, Alibaba, has declared war with Baidu over online shopping. Baidu has also suffered some serious self-inflicted casualties, thanks to a profitable but shady practice of mixing advertising and search results and a willingness, in at least one highly publicized instance, to put revenues ahead of customers' safety.
Those challenges have spurred Li to put Baidu through what could be a wrenching transition, a switch to a new advertising program that clearly distinguishes paid-search ads from other results. The company faces a tough task: improving the search experience and reducing its controversial ad practices without choking revenue growth. "Even if this means we have to suffer for a few quarters, I'm willing to make that bet--or sacrifice--to make sure we're moving in this direction," Li says in stiff but fluent English. "It's not an easy decision. But if we imagine the company ten years down the road, it's an obvious one."
Particularly if Baidu is to survive the assault from the world's most popular search company. Once an investor with 2.6% of Baidu, Google sold its stake in 2006 and got a government license to operate as Google China. Since then it has made large but undisclosed investments in the country and now draws an estimated $250 million of annual revenue there. Before the split Baidu threw down a marker, releasing a provocative, if unsubtle, video ad featuring a Chinese kung fu warrior and a mustachioed Westerner with a clutch of pretty women in a showdown of tongue twisters. The white guy loses, then vomits and collapses; the women flock to the warrior. At the bottom of the screen flashes the message: "Baidu Understands Chinese Better."

2010 shooting World Cup in Delhi cancelled

With no Olympic quota places on offer, the National Rifles Association of India (NRAI) has decided not to host the pistol and rifle World Cup scheduled here in March next year. "The 2010 ISSF World Cup in New Delhi has been cancelled.
The Organising Committee of the New Delhi World Cup Stage withdrew its application in an official communication to the ISSF," the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) said in a statement. "The Indian organisers explained the reason of their renouncement mentioning the decision of the IOC on the Olympic Quota Places distribution matter, stressing the fact that no Quota Places would be distributed at the New Delhi World Cup Stage," it added.
"The IOC restated that International Federations will only be able to distribute Olympic Quota Places starting from two years prior the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games. "Therefore, no Quota Places will be assigned during ISSF World Cup Stages, next year.
The first Quota Places will be awarded during the 50th ISSF World Championships in all events that will take place in Munich from July 29 through August 11, 2010," the statement read. .

Google launches online news reader 'Fast Flip'

Washington: Internet giant Google unveiled an online news reader called "Fast Flip" Tuesday, featuring stories from the BBC, The New York Times, The Washington Post and other major media outlets.

Google, which launched Fast Flip at the TechCrunch50 technology conference in San Francisco, compared using the quick-loading product to flipping through the pages of a magazine "really fast without unnatural delays."

Fast Flip allows users to quickly browse through news stories from the websites of Google's three dozen partners.
A large arrow allows a Web surfer to quickly jump from one article to the next, significantly faster than the time it usually takes to load a Web page. Besides the BBC, the Times and the Post, companies supplying content include magazines such as the Atlantic, Business Week, Cosmopolitan, Elle, Marie Claire, Newsweek and Popular Mechanics and online sites TechCrunch, Salon and Slate.

Google has had a strained relationship with some US publishers and the California Internet giant said its media partners would share advertising revenue from Fast Flip.

"Partners will share the revenue earned from contextually relevant ads," Fast Flip developer Krishna Bharat, a Google engineer, said in a blog post.

Fast Flip allows readers to browse stories by topic, by publication or by what is most viewed or most popular.

Farhan Akhtar goes international with 200cr Hollywood action flick

Farhan Akhtar’s ventures tend to be as grand and lasting as his poet-father’s words. After the rocking success of ‘Rock On’, his next venture is ‘Sid’. The film will be directed by ‘Rock On’ director Abhishek Kapoor. The film`s script would be penned by ‘Ramayan’ scriptwriter Ashok Kumar Banker.
It is believed that the film will be a sequel to Hrithik starrer ‘Lakshya’, but Banker denied the rumour. "This movie is not a sequel to any movie. But, this would definitely be a war movie,” he said.
Banker has also written a book ‘Gods of War’. Despite presumptions that the film can be based on the book, Banker insists the film would be entirely different from the book.

Human urine can help grow bumper tomato crops

Human urine can help grow bumper tomato crops that can be eaten safely, says a new study.
Surendra Pradhan, an environmental biology researcher at the University of Kuopio, Finland, and colleagues gave potted tomato plants one of three treatments: mineral fertilizer, urine and wood ash, or urine only. Yields for plants fertilized with urine, rich in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, quadrupled and matched those of mineral-fertilized plants. The urine-fertilized tomatoes also contained more protein and were safe for human consumption.
"This is a very simple technology. Urine can be collected in a urine-diverting toilet or it can be collected in a separate jerry can [from] an ordinary, pre-existing toilet," said Pradhan.
"If wood ash is available, this can be use as a supplement of phosphorus, potassium and other nutrients," Pradhan added.
He says that the method is a free alternative to expensive mineral fertilizer, which is not easily available in remote or hilly areas.
A pilot programme based on the research will be launched in Nepal in November, says Pradhan, who is of Nepalese origin.
But Hn. J on, eco-agriculture and sanitation system technology expert at the Stockholm Environment Institute in Sweden says, "the amount [of urine] that can be collected from a person or a family is fairly small".
"[The technique] is of great value to a subsistence farmer but does not suffice for even a medium-scale cash-crop farm," said J?on.
He adds that to fertilize larger areas, many urine-diverting toilets would have to be linked up to a good transportation system.
Their research was published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

Ford harnesses fighter jet technology for its cars

The Ford Motor Company has reportedly achieved a major success in harnessing fighter jet technology for its carsThe company is said to have harnessed radar technology from the F22 fighter jet as part of its bid to make its new Taurus "America's smartest full-sized sedan".
Radar devices being used by the company can sound an alarm and flash red lights when a driver gets too close to another car, and, thereby, help avoid crashes.
Ford is using this hi-tech gadget to revive what was once the company's top seller.
"This is game changing for safety," the BBC quoted Ford's safety head Steve Kozak as saying.
"The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in the US put out a report last year saying if every vehicle in the US were equipped with this forward collision warning system, we'd save about 7,000 lives a year," he added.
Competition from Japanese carmakers and slumping sales caused the Taurus to be discontinued after more than 20 years, but it has has been re-invented as part of a mission to redefine the company.
Radar located on the rear bumper of the Taurus can help prevent rear-end crashes, and warn drivers when they drift out of their lanes or when cars are in their blind spots.
According to Ford, the F22 radar technology they built upon was all open source.
"F22 fighter jets use this advanced radar that can read down the road and identify everything from trees to people. We then added our own Ford algorithms to determine whether or not objects are a ''vehicle target''. Then it monitors the vehicle target and always knows your position relative to those vehicle targets," said Pete Reyes, Ford's chief engineer for the 2010 Taurus.
Ford has revealed that technological innovations featuring in its vehicle include a voice-activated navigation system, multi-contour seats that massage the driver to prevent tiredness, a surround-sound system, and a technology called MyKey that can limit top sppeds to 80mph so as to control children’s driving behaviour.
When the car is started with MyKey, chimes can be set to sound as the car goes above 45mph.
Just in case a driver forgets to put on the seat belt, another chime rings. The sound system will not start until the driver and passenger have buckled up.
"The Taurus 2010 is a statement about where Ford is going," said Reyes.

A sensational 133-ball 138 by Sachin Tendulkar powered India to 319-5 in the final of the Compaq Cup against Sri Lanka on Monday.
The master batsmen plundered 10 fours and one six in his 44th ODI hundred that ended in the 46th over.
Tendulkar's marathon knock was accompanied by stellar half-centuries by MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh.
The Indian batting that had struggled to get partnerships going in the previous two games, stitched three big stands to set Sri Lanka a massive challenge.
Tendulkar was also well supported by Rahul Dravid (39) in a 95-run opening stand.
After Dravid perished to Sanath Jauasuriya in the 18th over, Indian skipper MS Dhoni, who had the fortune of winning the crucial toss, joined the Tendulkar to weave a 110-run stand.
Dhoni clobbered three fours in his 62-run knock, which was put to an end by Lasith Malinga when the Indian captain tried to up the ante in the batting powerplay.
In the death overs, India was powered by a brutal knock by an unbeaten 56 from Yuvraj Singh. The southpaw hit six boundaries and one six to reach his 41st ODI fifty. Tendulkar too unleashed an array of shots that included two consecutive boundaries of Ajantha Mendis before falling leg-before to him.
Virat Kohli, who replaced Dinesh Karthik, was not out on two off as many balls.
The hosts without their star spinner Muttiah Muralitharan, hope to win the game to take revenge of their previous two bilateral series loss to India in limited overs. Ajantha Mendis has got a game in place of Muralitharan.

Turn Vista into Windows 7 for free

Every time Microsoft delivers a new OS it's possible to get many of the features of a Windows upgrade in the previous version of Windows. Windows 7 is no exception. Here's a roundup of a few things you can do to make Windows Vista as Windows 7-like as possible, without shelling out for the new OS.
We'll start out with a couple tweaks, then tell you about four free apps you can download. And a tip of the hat to the amazing Gina Trapani at Lifehacker, from whom I picked up several of these tricks.
First the taskbar. Windows 7 lets you "pin" apps to the taskbar and we can approximate that in Vista. Here's how.
Right-click on your taskbar.
Select toolbars.
And choose Quick Launch.
Now drag the icons you wish to "pin" into the left side of the taskbar.
Right click on the taskbar again and uncheck "lock taskbar."
Now click on the three rows of dots, hold down the mouse, and drag the bar over until you see all your icons.
Now, they look a little small like that, so let's make them bigger. Make sure the taskbar is unlocked.
Now right click on the taskbar again.
Select the view menu and choose large icons.
That's OK. But if you want a real Mac-like dock, forget all that and install RocketDock. It gives you a whole new Macish dock that you can put down at the bottom of the window instead of the taskbar.
But your Windows still looks all Vista-y. One more interface tweak before we move on. Download VistaGlazz 1.3. It's a utility that changes some system files to allow you to implement third-party themes on Vista. Launch VistaGlazz and, if you're sure, agree to allow it to modify your system files. I did it, and had no issues. But I make no guarantee.
Now you need a Windows 7 theme. Go to DeviantArt.com and get "Windows 7 Style for Vista." It should be by giannisgx89.
Download it, uncompress it, and then inside the Windows 7 Style folder, go into the theme folder and find the file called Windows 7 and the folder called Windows 7. Copy both to C:Windows\Resources\Themes\. (You'll need admin access to copy these.)
Now right-click anywhere on your Desktop and select "Personalize." Click on "Theme" and supposedly you can select the Windows 7 theme from the drop-down list. That didn't work for me, so I had to browse to C:Windows/Resources/Themes and choose the Windows 7 theme manually. Once you've got it, press Apply and you have a Windows 7 look!
You can also go to DeviantArt for wallpaper, log-in screens, and other Windows 7ish customization options.
Four free apps and we're done.
In Windows 7, Aero Shake kicks in when you shake an active Window, minimizing all the other windows. You can download a Vista version from LifeHacker for free.
Next you'll want the nifty Win 7 feature that halves the size of a window and docks it to the side of the screen. There's an app for that. It's German and it's called AeroSnap. You can get it at aerosnap.de.vu.
The Windows 7 calculator is also a lovely souped-up thing. Some intrepid hacker has actually pulled it out of Windows 7 and made it available on Box.net. You'll have to do a search to find it. And there's no guaranteeing it will still be there when you do. Is it legal? That's fuzzy. Probably not. But it is cool. Just make sure you back up your Vista calculator if you decide to replace it with this one. Just in case things go sideways on you.
Finally, Windows 7 has a much easier way to select Wi-Fi networks. It's not a perfect match, but NetSetMan from netsetman.com is much better than the default Vista manger and gives you lots of other powerful tools as well.
There are plenty of other tweaks, like turning off User Account Control and tricks to speed up startup, covered in Ms. Trapani's

Osama bin Laden warns Americans in tape

Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden issued an apparently new audio tape on an Islamist website on Monday, warning the American people over their government's close ties to Israel.
The message, entitled "A statement to the American people", was approximately 10 minutes long and appeared on a website often used by supporters of al Qaeda.
The same website said earlier this month it would soon carry a "present" to Muslims from bin Laden, who is thought to be hiding in the mountainous terrain along the Afghan-Pakistani border, on the occasion of the holy month of Ramadan.
The message comes a few days after the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks carried out by al Qaeda operatives in 2001 in which nearly 3,000 people died in the United States.
In his last previous known message in June, bin Laden said U.S. President Barack Obama had planted the seeds of "revenge and hatred" towards the United States in the Muslim world.
Those remarks were issued just before a major speech by Obama who said he sought a "new beginning" between the United States and the Muslim community.

Stallone, Willis, Schwarzenegger together in new film

It is the action hero dream team. Sylvester Stallone will shoot a scene with Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger soon for his upcoming adventure The Expendables, due to hit theatres in 2010.
The man behind the successful Rambo and Rocky franchises has also brought Jason Statham, Jet Li, Mickey Rourke and Dolph Lundgren on board for the story of a team of mercenaries who head to South America on a mission to overthrow a dictator.
"Arnold, Bruce and I will be working together for the first time, maybe in two weeks, so I had to grow back my beard and get ready to film it in Los Angeles," Stallone told reporters at the Venice film festival where he is receiving a special award.
"It's very difficult to get us all together at the same time. It's impossible to get all those egos in the same room," the 63-year-old joked.
He said The Expendables would seek to put some of the punch back into action movies in an era when computer generated effects are increasingly dominating the genre.
"I wanted to do a film that was more about men and just doing things that we did back in the '80s and '90s with films that were a little bit more men on men, and actual physical stunts and also a story that isn't super-gigantic.
"And the thing was to find certain personalities that never would ever work together normally and put them altogether. It's like a dream team."
He also spoke about his next Rambo venture, the fifth in the series, which will enter the realms of science and technology.
"I don't want to keep repeating myself and just doing films about war," said Stallone. "This is a very psychological film about sophisticated man fighting primitive man.
"It's actually possible today, with all the cloning and stem cell research, to actually have some experiments that don't work very well and get out of control."

Now, computers become lawyers!

Washington: European researchers have created a legal analysis query engine that combines artificial intelligence, game theory and semantics to offer advice, conflict prevention and dispute settlement for European law.European law is complex, many layered and expanding. There are thousands of regulations, so many that compliance is difficult, time-consuming and expensive.
While harmonization is underway, the process itself demands that individuals, companies and law firms often have to relearn the system.
Meanwhile, areas like intellectual property rights (IPR) and digital rights regulation that seek to combat piracy are becoming evermore complex to understand and apply consistently across Europe.
Now, the ALIS Project has developed a computerized platform that uses artificial intelligence (AI), game theory and semantic technologies to ''understand'' and track the regulations in a large, and expanding area of expertise - in this case IPR.
ALIS sought to develop a working system in IPR to tackle the fundamental technological challenges before expanding it to more areas later on.
The system is much more than a simple database of relevant legal regulations.
It uses insights from game theory to help contentious parties come to an amicable agreement, either through conflict prevention or dispute resolution, and it can assist lawmaking as well.
Game theory looks at how strategic interactions between rational people lead to outcomes reflecting real player preferences.
It can be used to develop algorithms that find equilibria in games, markets, computational auctions, peer-to-peer systems, security and information markets.
Now, with ALIS, it is available for legal systems too.
This concept of equilibria supports conflict prevention, dispute resolution and offers decision support for lawmaking.
A key factor in the system is its test for regulatory compliance.
This is very powerful. It can help citizens, companies and lawyers quickly scan the relevant legal corpus to discover if they are compliant. It is a key factor for the other roles in the ALIS system as well.
For conflict prevention, dispute resolution and lawmaking, the ALIS first establishes if the parties, or the proposed legislation, are compliant with current law.
Once compliance is established, the system can present a series of options based on an analysis of the potential conflict or dispute, or it can provide information to further assist lawmakers to formulate policy.
Similarly, the tool aims to rapidly speed up the work done by lawyers, helping to resolve relatively straightforward cases faster, so they can concentrate on more complex problems.

Brother of Osama Bin Laden dies in Saudi Arabia

Riyadh: The family of Osama bin Laden has announced the death of one of the terror mastermind's brothers.
In a full-page notice on Sunday in Al-Riyadh newspaper, the family said Thabet bin Laden passed away and the funeral is scheduled that afternoon in the holy city of Mecca. The notice said he died yesterday but did not give the cause of death or his age.
Thabet bin Laden was one of 54 children born to Mohammed bin Laden, a poor Yemeni immigrant who started the family contracting business in the 1930s that grew into a multimillion dollar construction empire.
The bin Laden family disavowed any links with Osama bin Laden in 1994, when Saudi Arabia stripped him of his citizenship after he called for the overthrow of the royal family.

104-yr-old lady who loves being on Facebook, Twitter

Tuesday is her 104th birthday, but that hasn't stopped Britain's Ivy Bean from being an avid Twitter user and possibly the oldest person on the social networking site.
From the care home where she lives in the northern English city of Bradford, near Leeds, Bean updates her more than 27,000 Twitter followers about the ups and downs of her life - from getting her hair done with her good friend Mabel, to eating fish and chips and watching her favorite game show, Deal or No Deal, on TV.
Last month, she tweeted her sadness that her friend Norma had passed away overnight.
Before getting onto Twitter, Bean was already active on Facebook, where she maxed out her 5,000-friend limit in no time.
Bean says she prefers Twitter because it's easier than Facebook - it only requires updating. She has linked both accounts so that her tweets automatically show up on Facebook.
Bean says she knows people must think it's amazing that she's so active on online, but she thinks it's a good way of keeping in touch with people.
And for those who find it hard to jump on the Twitter bandwagon, Bean offers this advice: "Keep on at it."
"Old" is not the first - or second or even 10th - word that comes to mind with Bean, an engaging, lively and friendly lady with a warm and infectious smile.
A resident of Hillside Manor, she recently won a gold medal at the residential home's Over-75 Olympics in the Frisbee-throwing category. And she enjoys bowling on the home's Nintendo Wii.
No surprise, perhaps, for a lady who was a gymnast when she was younger.
What do her friends think of her online popularity? "I think they might be jealous," she said with a joking laugh.
Others at Hillside Manor also have Twitter accounts, but not Bean's friend, Mabel Davis, 87.
"Just put me on yours, Ivy," she says.
Already, Bean's centenarian tweeting and Facebooking have attracted international attention, and news outlets from around the world have interviewed her.
Bean's daughter, Sandra Logan, 61, said she arrived for a visit one day only to find her mom busy with a call.
"I'm on the phone with Israel," Bean called out to her daughter.
Part of the reason Bean is so active online is because the care home makes activities for its residents a priority. One resident wanted to learn more about photography, so he now takes a course once a week at a local college. The home also helped another resident get a passport so he could visit his son in Spain.
Hillside Manor also recently hosted a quiz with students from the local college. The subject was history. The Hillside Manor residents won.
"We're trying to do something different than knitting or crochet," explained Pat Wright, the home's manager.
Bean came from a large family with four brothers and three sisters. All are gone, Logan said.
Bean, who was in the middle of her siblings, was approaching 40 when she got married during the "great war" to Harold Gibson Bean. He was a cook in the army, and she worked in a mill.
After the war, the couple got a job "in service" to a wealthy family. Ivy Bean was a housekeeper and her husband was the cook and butler to Lord and Lady Guinness in Northamptonshire, England. Daughter Sandra, their only child, was born two years later, in 1947.
The couple retired together but Harold Bean died a few years later, when he was in his 70s, Logan said.
Bean now has three great-grandchildren with two more on the way, Logan said. They all call their famous great-grandmother 'Little Nan'.
Wright says Bean is "very open" to new suggestions and new ideas and is always willing to have a go at something.
"She must have been like that all her life," Wright says. "It's not a new thing. I think if you're one of those people that'll try anything through your life, it doesn't stop when you get old."
As she types an update on her Twitter page, Bean certainly seems to be displaying an open mind. Would she agree?
"I don't know if I have or not," Bean says. "But there's something there. There must be!"

Google developing software to aid newspapers

Search engine giant Google is developing a technology that will help newspapers in charging money from online readers.
In a proposal to the Newspaper Association of America, Google said it is working on a software that would help newspapers to charge money from 'micro-payment', a payment vehicle which would be available both to Google and non-Google properties within the next year.
"While we believe that advertising will likely remain the same source of revenue for most news content, a paid model can serve as an importance source of additional revenue. In addition, a successful paid content model can enhance advertising opportunities, rather than replace them," the company said.
It said in a statement that it will mitigate the risk of non-payment by assigning credit limits based on past purchasing behaviour and having credit card instruments on file for those with higher credit limits and using proprietary risk engines to track abuse or fraud.
Google would also allow readers to utilise single sign-on capability to access content and manage subscriptions, while publishers would be able to combine subscriptions from different titles together for one price.
At present, there are only two newspapers ---Financial Times and The Wall Street Journal that charge readers for content, although both offer some free news content to readers.
The search engine site said that paid content model has two main challenges. First, the content must offer value to users. Only content creators can address this. The second is to create a simple payment model that is painless for users.
However, Newspaper Association of America has asked the companies to provide information on how to generate income from online contents.

Hacker pleads guilty to huge theft of card numbers

A computer hacker who was once a federal informant and was a driving force behind one of the largest cases of identity theft in U.S. history pleaded guilty Friday in a deal with prosecutors that will send him to prison for up to 25 years.Albert Gonzalez, 28, of Miami, admitted pulling off some of the most prominent hacking jobs of the decade — invading the computer systemsof such retailers as TJX Cos., BJ's Wholesale Club, OfficeMax, Boston Market, Barnes & Noble and Sports Authority. Federal authorities say tens of millions of credit and debit card numbers were stolen.
Gonzalez entered guilty pleas in U.S. District Court in Boston to 19 counts of conspiracy, computer fraud, wire fraud, access device fraud and aggravated identity theft. He also pleaded guilty to a New York indictment charging one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud for hacks into the Dave & Buster's restaurant chain.
Under his plea agreements, Gonzalez faces 15 to 25 years in prison in the Massachusetts case and up to 20 years in the New York case. The sentences would run concurrently. If he had been convicted of all the charges and sentenced to the maximum, he could have received a sentence of several hundred years.
Sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 8.
Authorities said Gonzalez was the ringleader of a group that targeted large retailers.
Gonzalez's Miami attorney, Rene Palomino Jr., said Gonzalez is "extremely remorseful."
"He just feels really bad, mainly because of the damage he's caused, but also because of what his family has had to endure," Palomino said. "He just wants to go ahead and do the right thing and take responsibility for his actions. One day, he will go and lead a productive life like any other citizen."
Michael Loucks, acting U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts, said the investigation and prosecution of identity theft is a top priority of the Justice Department.
"In the past 10 years, there has been a dramatic growth in the transfer and storage of credit and debit card data on computer networks, Loucks said in a statement. "It is ... important that we work hard to investigate and prosecute the theft of personal identity data that citizens entrust to computer networks every day."
Gonzalez, who was known online as "soupnazi," was a self-taught computer genius, Palomino said. In 2003, Gonzalez was arrested for hacking but was not charged because he became an informant, helping the Secret Service find other hackers. But authorities said he continued to use his talents for illegal activities.

Google proposes micropayments for online news

Google is working on a micropayment system that would allow newspapers to easily charge for online content, the web search giant has revealed in a proposal to the Newspaper Association of America.
In the proposal, which was released on the internet on Thursday, Google said that its micropayment system would be up and running within the year and would enable simple payment of one cent to several dollars.
However Google clarified that it did not believe that the scheme would be the salvation of newspapers, which have seen their circulation dramatically decline as readers view articles online, often through free news aggregators like Google News.
"While we believe that advertising will likely remain the main source of revenue for most news content, a paid model can serve as an important source of additional revenue," the company said in its proposal.
Google said its system would be integrated with its current Checkout online payments system and would allow users to utilise one sign on to access various media, while publishers would be able to bundle several titles in a single subscriptions. Google will take an unspecified cut of the revenue generated by publishers, the memo said

Man finds python almost twice his size in his toilet

An Australian man will be putting his toilet seat down in the future after discovering a python almost twice his size curled up in the bowl.
Snake wrangler Chris Peberdy was called to a house in rural Virginia near Darwin in far northern Australia after the owner, Erik Rantzau, spotted a 3-metre-long (almost 10 feet) carpet python in his toilet.
"It's not unusual to find snakes of that size in the tropics but you don't find usually them in toilets," Peberdy told Reuters.
"He must have come up through a drain. He was cruising around the house at night and returning to the toilet by day."
Peberdy, who runs Darwin-based snake handling company Snake NT, said the owner lives on a rural property where snakes are respected, so he left the python alone and used a different bathroom until it could be safely removed.
It took the snake wrangler four trips out to the house to catch the carpet python, which is non-venomous and kills its prey by constriction.
"He was so tightly curled into the pipes that I could not move him but eventually he popped out far enough for me to catch him," said Peberdy who is called out to catch up to 1,000 snakes a year.
The captured snake was released into the bush about 2.5 kms (1.5 miles) from the house.
Peberdy had some advice for people living in that area: "Keep the toilet seat down and look before you sit!"

Sri Lanka beat India by 139 runs in 3rd ODI

Less than 24 hours after India had ascended to the position of top ODI team, Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s boys were brought crashing down to earth by a disciplined Sri Lankan unit who inflicted a humiliating 139 run defeat on their fancied opponents.
India failed miserably in their endeavor to deliver a performance in accordance to their top billing and were thoroughly out-played by their hosts in all departments of the game, leaving Dhoni and rest of the think-tank with lot of soul searching ahead of the final on Monday.
If Sanath Jayasuriya (98) and Thilina Kandamby (91*) proved India’s nemesis with the bat, it was the unheralded Angelo Mathews who spelled India’s doom with phenomenal figures off.
No wonder then that it was India’s second biggest defeat to Sri Lanka in terms of runs.
The only positive Dhoni could have possibly derived from today’s game was that maybe today was ‘one of those off days when everything that can go wrong, goes wrong’, which every team encounters.
Luckily for him, India had it today in an inconsequential tie!
Starting from the toss it was Sri Lanka who all the way leaving India to play catch-up cricket.
Their openers came out all guns blazing depositing the India’s new ball bowlers- RP Singh and Ashish Nehra to various parts of the park.
Ishant Sharma did provided India with their first breakthrough when he induced a thick edge off Tillakaratne Dilshan’s bat, straight into Dhoni’s gloves, but by then Sri Lanka had already breezed past the 50 run-mark in just the 8th over.
Dilshan made 23 runs off 27 balls with 4 fours.
Harbhajan Singh and Yusuf Pathan then removed Mahela Jayawardene (17) and Kumara Sangakkara (5) cheaply to raise Indian hopes, only to be thwarted by Jayasuriya first, and then Kandamby.
Jayasuriya, however, looked set to hog the limelight at R Premadasa here on Saturday.
Tha Matara Mauler treated the holiday crowd to some exceptional power hitting, answering his critics in a grand manner befitting his tremendous talents. He notched up 98 runs off just 79 balls, dissecting the Premadasa with 13 hits to the fence, before falling 2-runs short of what would have been his 29th ODI hundred.
Ashish Nehra played the spoilsport for the 38-year old warrior trapping him LBW in the first ball of the 29th over.Following Jayasuriya’s departure, however, the inexperience in the Sri Lankan ranks did threaten to come to the fore when Mathews fell almost immediately afterwards for a 37-ball 19 runs. He was beaten by part-timer Suresh Raina’s flight, only to become MS Dhoni’s second stumping.
But Kandamby and Kapugedera eased Sri Lankan nervers, much to the agony of the Indians.
The duo indulged in street-smart cricket, cutting away risky shots without compromising on the scoring rate as Sri Lanka whistled past 250 run-mark in the 45th over thanks to their 83-run partnership.

Cost of owning a bank account

You have opened a new bank account with a new age bank, after receiving a call from one of the bank's telecalling agent. This agent had extolled the benefits of opening a bank account and you were charmed by her claims. So you went ahead and opened the account. But are you aware what are the costs of owning the account?
Have you been made aware of the various costs in owning a bank account? Here are some important aspects you should be aware of:
Non-maintenance of minimum balance: Different banks have different amounts needed to be kept as minimum balance. These amounts range from Rs 1,000 for nationalized banks to over Rs 1 lakh for private banks. If you fail to maintain this minimum balance, then you will end up paying minimum balance charge. This amount can range from Rs. 20 for nationalized banks to Rs 850 for private banks.
Charges for cash withdrawal at 3rd party ATM: Though today, cash withdrawal at 3rd party ATM is free, RBI plans to restrict this free usage to 5 transactions per month, with effect from October 2009. Any transaction over 5 transactions will attract a fine of Rs 20 per transaction.
Account closure charges: Banks also hate to see you go within 6 months. So you will end up paying anywhere from Rs 50 to Rs 200 if you close the account within 6 months.
Certificates: Do you want balance certificates, interest certificates or address confirmation, signature verification or any other document attested by your bank? Then be ready to shell out anywhere from Rs 50 to Rs 250, towards the charges for the same.
Bounced cheque charges: You have issued a cheque or have deposited a cheque. But that cheque bounces. So you end up paying anywhere from Rs 50 to Rs 200 if you bank with nationalized bank or Rs 100 to Rs 500 if your bank is a private bank.
Chequebook charges: Banks offer you a certain number of chequebooks free in a year. If you exceed this limit and you will end up paying for them. The charges range from Rs 50 to Rs 200 per chequebook. So if you use a lot of chequebooks in a year, you will end up making your bank rich.
Duplicate account statement charges: It is mandatory for banks to send you one statement per quarter. Unfortunately, if you end up losing this statement, you will end up having to pay the bank for the duplicate statement. This charge can range between Rs 50 to Rs 500 for each statement.
ATM/Debit card fees: Most private banks charge a fee for issuing ATM/Debit cards. Such fee for the card range from Rs 100 to Rs 500.
Cash transactions at branch: Most banks, particularly private banks encourage you to use the ATM often. To prevent you from performing a lot of cash transactions at the branch, most banks, especially private banks give you a certain number of transactions at a branch free, beyond which you are charged.
Miscellaneous charges: If you think, these are the only charges you'll have to bear, then you are wrong. You will also have to contend with outstation cheque clearance charges, DD/pay order charges, standing instruction charges, dormant account charges, etc.
If you think opening a bank account is free, then you are wrong. A bank account comes with hosts of charges. Unfortunately most of the marketing executives don't highlight the charges. Hence it becomes your responsibility to find out about these charges. It will prevent you from having to pay any unnecessary charges.

'Halal' cosmetics for Muslim women

For Muslim women who feel they are violating Islam’s teachings by using skin creams with alcohol and pig residues, Layla Mandi has the answer: religiously-correct “halal” cosmetics.
The Canadian makeup artist who converted to Islam is marketing cosmetics called OnePure, which she says have the luxury feel of international brands minus the elements banned under Islamic law. “There are pork derivatives and alcohol in most cosmetics products, so Muslims should really use something else,” Mandi said.
From Islamic banking to alcohol-free hotels, products tagged as halal have become popular among devout Muslims — who pray five times a day and perform other rituals. Under the concept of halal — which means “lawful” in Arabic — pork and its by-products, alcohol and animals not slaughtered according to Koranic procedures are all forbidden.
“Muslims don’t want to go around and pray five times a day having pork residues on their body,” said Mandi, in her early thirties and swathed in a slim black abaya, or cloak, with wisps of blond hair sticking from under her head scarf.
According to Mandi, fatty acids and gelatin used in moisturisers, shampoos, face masks and lipsticks as well as other items are often extracted from pigs. Determined to create a halal product, Mandi brought together a dermatologist and a chemist and told them the deal: cosmetics and skin-care products free of pork and alcohol.

We have pulled economy back from the brink: Obama

US President Barack Obama [ Images ] said the "bold and decisive" steps taken by his administration after inauguration has pulled America's economy back from the brink.
"Thanks to the bold and decisive action we have taken since January, I can stand here with confidence and say that we have pulled this economy back from the brink," Obama told lawmakers in a joint address to the US Congress wherein he passionately called for health care reforms.
"When I spoke here last winter, this nation was facing the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. We were losing an average of 700,000 jobs per month. Credit was frozen. And our financial system was on the verge of collapse," Obama said as he opened his speech.
Admitting that a full and vibrant recovery was still many months away, the President vowed to continue with the steps to strengthen the economy.
"I will not let up until those Americans who seek jobs can find them; until those businesses that seek capital and credit can thrive; until all responsible homeowners can stay in their homes. That is our ultimate goal," Obama said.
And this has been achieved due to support from the US Congress in last several months, and especially those who have taken the difficult votes that have put us on a path to recovery, he added.
